If your newborn/infant had PT for favoring one side...
How many days per week did you go to PT and for how long do you have to work with the baby? Is it just until it goes away? How old was DC and how long did it take before you saw results?
We just got referred and I was just curious what sort of time commitment this is going to be.

Re: If your newborn/infant had PT for favoring one side...
My DS has torticollis. He favors turning his head to the right, therefore he did not have full range of motion to the left. I contacted EI for a PT evaluation after his pediatrician recommended I do so around 4 months (he's 7 months now, and the PT started around 5 1/2 months). He was a preemie, therefore a bit behind in his gross motor. When on his tummy, he couldn't lift his head or chest. When pulled to a sitting position, his head lagged a bit. He gets PT now 2x/week for 45 minutes. She comes to the house and I sit in on the sessions to see what she does. She also gave us a sheet of exercises to work on to improve his strength and increase his range of motion. I've seen results right away. He improves weekly. The PT is for 6 months, and then he will be reevaluated. If he qualifies again, the PT will continue. If not, then he exits EI. I believe there has to be a 30% delay, if I remember correctly, to qualify.

Thanks for responding! How much time do you have to spend doing exercises at home? I just got my referral from the ped so I will be calling them Monday. I am looking forward to starting this process so we can nip this in the bud.

Re: If your newborn/infant had PT for favoring one side...
DD had torticollis on her left side. She went to a neurologist and and started PT at 3 months. We went to PT 1x a week for about 4 months. She had very weak head/neck control. The PT was great. She got stronger with every visit. We did a lot of tummy time and the PT showed us exercises to help her strengthen her weak side. She was discharged at 7 months and has reached all of her developmental milestones since! GL

I don't spend a ton of time doing exercises at home. Alot of the things can be achieved through play or by the way we hold him. I let him play on his floor mat alot so he can practice rolling over, being on his tummy, holding his head/neck up, etc. When he's playing, I'll take a little time to sit with him and have him focus on a toy to turn his head to the left, or do a quick stretch. When holding him, I hold him how the PT demonstrated so he will tilt his head, or hold him where he has to turn his head to the left to see whatever there is to see. Again, it's all through play, and I'm spending time with him anyway, so the exercises don't take any additional time out of our day. The PT said to do them when we could.

We did it once a week for 4 or 6 months. I don't remember. I was terrible about the exercises at home but like PP said I tried to incorporate it into play and the way we help him.
