Growing your hair out

I'm trying to grow my hair long, right now it's about shoulder length. I haven't had it long in a while, and I don't know if I should get it styled while trying to grow it out.
Also, can anyone recommend a good hairdresser in Nassau? I'm pretty tired of mine.

My hairdresser has been growing my hair out for a couple of years now (gradually..I didn't want it this long, but she eased me into it)-she has her own salon in Garden City (downtown, on Nassau Blvd) called Textures-her name is Christine and she used to work at Hairsay...
