I have heard taking tylenol/motrin about an hour before can help with the pain. If only getting a bikini wax, wear crappy underwear (you keep them on).

It depends
Some places they trim for you, some places no underwear, some just a paper bikimi, it just depends on the place and your comfort level.
Showering is a good prep! 
Ok in all seriousness, you can take a pain reliever and they now sell an antiseptic spray to put on before you get waxed.
You may want to tell them that you getting it for the 1st time.

i usually take some time of pain reliever about an hour before.
don't drink before. it makes it hurt more.
eta: alcoholic beverages i mean.

this could be a stupid male prospective but dont you need to let it grow out a lil bit before getting it waxed? so there is something to actually grab...?

yes you do. I just got back and the lady told me that the hair could have been longer. It def. hurt but not in the area that I thought was going to hurt the most
