*would you do this?

Part I

We do not have a large bedroom but I want to have my handman build a closet -- it would be the side of the whole wall ... from top to bottom. we would have room for all of our clothes and major storage space ... this way we would only need a bed, and end tables. quality furniture cost so much money and honestly i could store 5 times more in a well built closet. we would have his and hers.

Part II
I was thinking of adding a stackable washer and dryer into the closet. This way we do not have to go the basement. It would be very convenient.

Put the washer and dryer in the bedroom?

While convenient, I would not do that.

I would however use the space and built the wall to wall, floor to ceiling closet and limit the other smaller pieces of furniture that take floor space and don't hold much except a few socks and t-shirts.

would definitely go with the closet!

I am on the fence about the stackable in the closet- on the one hand I have heard with real estate its good to have it on a main floor like by bedrooms rather than the basement- I am just not sure its worth giving up that valuable closet space for- sorry not sure

I like the custom closet idea, but to add the plumbing, drainage and electricity to the closet, plus dealing with the noise in your bedroom wouldn't be worth it for me.

W&D in closet - no

can you put the W&D in a hallway closet maybe? I just don't think I would want a W&D in my BR.

I would definitely do the closet. We are eventually going to do the same thing in our MBR but the estimates that I got are $$$ so we are waiting a bit.

I wouldn't put the W/D in there.

The W&D in the closet I vote no. I would rather have them in the basement then my BR honestly.

Wall of closets... sure... We have that in our bedroom... Just make sure you can configure funiture still while losing that wall (which im sure you did)... Our situation is prob extreme bc 1 wall is all closets and another is sliding glass doors... so we lose 2 walls ...

Washer and dryer... sure it would be sooo ideal... but god forbid theres a leak... i can just see evrything getting ruined PLUS it leaking through down to the next floor...

Mycousin has the w/d in her closet attached to the bedroom and I thought it odd at first, then I REALLY thought about it and love the idea. The only wash she does downstairs are kitchen towels and tiny rugs. Much easier carrying those up then everything else!

My stepdad is a contractor and says that he's seen washers leak when not in the basement all the time causing a tremendous amount of damage. He said they could be installed just perfect and STILL end up leaking because stuff happens, you know? At least if they are in the basement and leak (as long as it's not a finished basement) you wouldn't get floor damage, mold, etc.

I would love to have WD on the 2nd floor, but i just saw on Holmes on Homes (and I know he overreacts a bit) that WD need to be on slabs - the shaking can cause damage to the structure.

We have our WD on the second floor but it's on a separate room that is tiled. I wouldn't put it in my bedroom just for the noise alone.

I've never had a problem with my washer leaking though. 7 years and counting.

yes to the closet, we have this one entire wall of closet space in our bedroom. It is filled! But I hope to go through everything in the winter when we are forced indoors again.

As far as the washer and dryer i wouldn't recommend it in a bedroom because all W&D make noise and its rather annoying. We put our W&D in a hallway/breezeway that connected a front bedroom to our main hallway near so you can access the bathroom with out walking around. Kinda hard to explain but anyway we basically have a floor drain that is hooked up to regular drainage system just in case the washer leaks (and it does) so the washer sits in a pan which is kinda ugly looking so when we do the room over again i am doing regular floor tiles with a regular drain in the floor (sloped) so it drains in there.

not the W&D though...i would do a W&D in an upstairs hallway maybe (more practical close to the bedrooms) but not in a bedroom or a bathroom

Great idea for the closet, and as another poster said, just make sure after you lose the space in the bedroom that you still have plenty of space for your bed and end tables and you're not smooshed in there.

As for the W&D, no way. Just the potential for any kind of leak would make me shy away from having that in my bedroom, near all my other clothes, nice bedding, carpet etc. Not to mention the potential humidity caused by any dryer/venting issues that could arise.
I understand the convenience, but unless you can put it in a hallway, i'd keep major appliances out of the bedroom

I wouldn't want something involving water, electricity and venting to be right up against nice woodwork - I'm wary of upstairs washer/dryers as it is. I'd have the closet built though, that's a good idea.
