Can we talk about this car bomb in Times Square?

I'm not easily freaked out by much, I'll be the first to admit that, but this freaked me out a bit. I mean, from what I hear, it would have caused a fire instead of an explosion and they seemed to have handled it really well, but I guess it's just a reminder of the crazy world we live in. I was there last night. We heard the small explosion (we were waiting on the corner of 45th and 8th). We couldn't get to our theater.

(I'm psyched that telecharge just exchanged our tickets for next week.)

It was amateurish. It was someone who was trying to stir up sh!t.

The city is very safe.

I've worked in the city for the past 15 years and NOTHING has ever happened to me.

I find this terrifying. What stops another attempt? Times Square has always made me nervous.

I actually went to soho last nite (train got into penn at 5pm and we hopped into a cab) and I had NO IDEA what was going on.

NYPD are the best - I feel completely safe when i am in the city.

Re: Can we talk about this car bomb in Times Square?

Let me be clear, I feel totally safe in the city. I honestly do, but it still freaked me out. Not because it happened in the city, but because it happened so "close to home". I mean, the response to it was fantastic and yes it was "amateurish" but it was still a real reality check, ya know?

This upsets me to no end.

DH is always in the city for work. Always in big buildings. Always in subways.

I am not one to worry but yes, this freaks me out a lot!!!

This car bomb thing definitely freaks me out.

My DH is working overnight in the area that the car bomb was found, and he's NYPD. I hate stuff like this - cause it makes me so paranoid for his safety. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know just what you mean. My dh is NYPD and involved with counter terrorism. He does not want me to take our children into the city for anything, and I know he will probably have to go into Manhattan next week. Its so scary. NY got lucky this week, but there wiil likely be copycats who may be more successful.

We can only Chat Icon

With that said. I am sure your dh will be fine. They usually come home to us fine, right?

Can I ask if he is normally in Manhattan, or was he called in?

Re: Can we talk about this car bomb in Times Square?

We were two blocks away having dinner when it was all going on, had no clue. When we got over to our theater on 44th st, they were just opening that block up. Still didn't know it was a car bomb until we got home. Knew something went on but thought maybe a fire or something. I think that they did a fantastic job of containing this and keeping mass hysteria at bay. We are at war with terrorists, I am actually surprised this is the first time this has happened.

I hope that we are this lucky every time something is attempted. DH and my dad both work in Manhattan,it is scary but I can't let fear get the better of me. I have to be rational.

I work on Wall Street and pass the WTC site everyday. Each day is a gift since after 9/11 ANYTHING is possible.

I am actually surprised more stuff like this doesnt happen more often.

We are not 100% safe here --the police can only do so much but these people WANT to kill us/cause harm

I work close by as well. Its scary but I just try to live my life. I am surprised that more of these threats dont happen. Seems to be a common tactic based on my military experience. I wonder if its just the calm before the storm. Thats in the back of my head constantly.

This actually gave me a good deal of comfort that people are in tune enough and the authorities act swiftly enough that maybe big disasters can be thwarted.

I only recently moved out of the city after 10yrs and DH & I both work there and will continue to as we love it there. Scary things can happen anywhere and I wont alter my lifestyle to avoid things that might/might not happen and I cant control.

ETA: I was 4 blocks from the WTC on 9/11 and saw the 2nd plane hit from my office window. I ran for my life that day when the buildings were coming down. So even after that experience, I still feel this way about the city...

YES!!!!

people give cops so much bunk but at the end of the day, they do their job and the city is safer for it.

and super kudos to the street vendors looking out!!!!

God Bless them all!!!!!!

I still feel that NYC city is one of the safest large cities in the world. it is my home and were I feel most secure, come what may.

ITA! I am so surprised that it hasn't happened any sooner! I guess NYPD is doing a great job! Honestly though, I feel like whatever is meant to happen, will happen and I go to work with that mentality everyday.
