i don't want to scare you, but i have a question
So, this morning, I was taking my dog out around 5/530. TG, i had him on a leash and brought him in my backyard. I was on my deck and leanted over to wave my hand past the motion detector light to get more light in the backyard. Something ran fast from the side of my house when it went on and went to the back of my backyard. I litterally dragged my dog inside cause i was so scared. At first i thought maybe racoon or possum.... but it was the size of a dog but did't act like a dog. Weird. Then, from the sliding glass door, I watched and saw it walk slowly behind my shed it was orangish redish..... It wasn't a cat, dog, racoon, posuum. My husband said it could be a FOX!!! I want to know if anyone has ever heard of this in Nassau county... We don't have a lot of land at all!!! What else could it have been? PS, I am in Seaford....North

its a red tailed fox. they are all over LI and they are MUCH more scared of you then you are of them. I see them all the time. they run fast and usually take off as soon as they see or hear anything

Wow, I never knew that. Should I do anything about this? I have a 13 pound pug.... do you think it is ok to let him out alone? Will the fox try to attack him? Do I have to worry about our safety?

I have a pug too! yours is so tiny! mine is a boy thats 23lbs! my pug has actually chased the fox out of our yard the fox jumped the fence.
I don't think you have to be too concerned, but as with any wild animal I would be cautious. But to date, they have never hurt my dog, and hes seen them many times

We used to have red foxes ALL the time in our yard growing up. We grew up in Kings Park and our house backed up to a wooded area.

I've seen foxes in Nassau before - i used to live in RVC and we had a fox that would occasionally appear
As other posters said.. they're waaay more afraid of you than you are of them, and i'm pretty sure they wouldn't attack your dog. They're just looking for food most of the time

Foxes do catch and eat cats though. I try to be sure my cat is in by dark. We had one taken by a fox years ago. The fox and cat - a big strong cat - had several standoffs, I even chased the fox away twice.
Did you know foxes bark? It sounds like someone coughing.

Uh oh. I better not tell my MIL this. She lives in Seaford and it would freak her out. I have 2 pugs and I let them out in our backyard all the time unsupervised. We are a couple towns East of Seaford though.
