need help with research for not separating twins in the classroom.

my girls are going to full time prek next year. and the principal has been known to separate multiples. If I come to registration with research, this may help me take them in the same classroom. anyone gone through this or help with any research? TIA

I am teacher and I can ONLY speak for what I see in the classroom ... not sure if that is what you are looking for though.

I think that as they advance in their educations it would be best for them to be separated based on several sets of twins I have taught over the years. I must stress that in Pre-K and K I think that having them together is suitable but for first grade and or higher you may want to consider having them be separated.

The dynamics of the classroom are vey complicated that I cannot fully describe (nor that you are interested in it) on why I feel that siblings should (if possible) be apart. A major thing is that most of the twins do their hw together, have the same answers, show the same work ... it is very hard to decipher the strengths and weaknesses of each sibling. Also, the twins usually have very strong opinions and feelings about being in the same class. A lot of them yearn for a little glimpse of individuality despite their undeniable bond and love they have.

*sorry I had to respond quickly ... will edit later

(just to add, i think all sets of multiples need to be evaluated on an individual basis... Schools should not automatically separate all twins w.o considering each case and each childs needs first)

In this article, you will find research that supports that twins benefit from being kept together. It is tedious but I would print it, read it, and highlight the areas that support what you want. Pay attention to the end.

Hope you find the helpful!

Good luck with your girls, they are beautiful and will do great in school because they have a mother who cares about their academic and social development! Best of Luck.Research Study

Re: need help with research for not separating twins in the classroom.

My twins are in the same class. The teacher told me from the beginning that if they got to clingy the teacher would separate them. They are thriving & individual. They no longer depend on each other at all.

I did not ask for them to be in the same class. (In fact I wanted them separated) But, I am fine with that. I did ask if they will be separated for Kindergarten. I was told they have to see. But, the will be separated for 1st & on.

Sorry, TTC'er crashing...

I totally agree with zuzuspetal. As a teacher, I have had twins and triplets (separated) in my classroom. I think that pre k, k is probably fine, but after that, I think that each child needs to be seen as an individual. They shouldn't be compared constantly to their twin and many times they are due to different strengths and weaknesses. JMO. Good luck!

Re: need help with research for not separating twins in the classroom.

Just had Pre-K registration and I spoke at length about this with the teacher. Her advice is to keep them together for Pre-K and seperate them for Kindgarten because it will make the transition into 1st grade easier if they are apart.

I am a big believe in seperating them. I don't think anyone has a right to tell us what to do, it should be between the parents and school. No law should be involved.

One of my kids is much more outgoing and talkative and sometimes talks over my other one. I think separating them will benefit both of them greatly.

So I will keep them together for Pre-K, but I am going to seperate them in Kindergarten.

Re: need help with research for not separating twins in the classroom.

I have kept my girls together. I think it would have been tramautizing for them to be separted. In the beginning they were always sitting together. In centers, circle time & snack. The teacher would encourage them to separate but they always stuck together.

Now they do their own thing and have individual friends. I am going to keep them in the same class for pre-k but prob separate them for kindergarten.

I am also a teacher and have had twins in the same class. Twins def look out for one another and I think have them in the same class is too much of a distraction for each other.

Re: need help with research for not separating twins in the classroom.

I just came here to post the same question. The school my kids will be attending in the fall does not like to keep them together. I just think that going to a new school, all day, and taking the bus and new friends is too much newness for one of my boys to take. Change is not something he is great with especially when seperate from his brother. It would actually hurt his learning to be seperate. Just having his bro there helps, they play independently in pre k have different likes and dislikes but even their prek teacher things for the first year it would really benefit one of my boys and would not hurt the other one in any way.
I don't want them to be together forever but I really don't like their being a policy for my children in place without even looking at my family and the dynamic between the two of them. Every child is not the same just as every set of twins are not the same. I am a big proponant of them being seperate childrenn, independent thinkers and individuals and not "the twins" but I really think in this case they need to be in the same class. I really want to go in with info because I don't want this to have to be a fight because from what I have heard they can not force them to be seperate. I will have to read those links. Thanks for posting them.
