painting lesson
Eh well we primed the primed again and then started to put the ceiling coat on and the stains are still bleeding through (after even being spakled) so for people who have very stained/smoked ceilings that were never cared for do yoruself a favor and buy the kilz primer/stain buster etc
We had to go out and buy it and with one coat - Gone! Now we have to repaint the ceiling which just set us back AGAIN!
oh we tried BM primer, Valspar and both didn't work. We also Valspar ceiling paint rules with the purple coloring - got the front bedroom all done just need to brush in the corners.
Tomorrow we do the actual colors!

Re: painting lesson
Here's something to add to that. . . KILZ primer comes in an up-spraying spray can so that you can cover a small spot! i used it in my office and worked perfectly!
thanks for the info...
now, answer me this (batman: riddle me this ) , what do you do with new sheetrock? do you have to prime? or is two regular coats fine?

you need to put one coat of primer on new sheetrock because you have spackle that needs to be primed over. Plus the paint will stick better to the primer then to the bare sheetrock. But you can just use regular primer on new sheetrock. GL!

Re: painting lesson
Yup, Kilz is my best friend in our old house! Also, for really tough stains, we use oil-based Kilz. It completely covers everything. The only bad thing is it stinks

Re: painting lesson
ughhh...i know the feeling. The house i live in was my Great Uncles...he lived & smoked in it for over 40 years...needless to say the white walls were yellow from nicotine. We had to scrub every surface with some kind of cleaner mixture...and then primed with Kilz and then painted. And every now & then if the house has been closed up while we are away...you can smell smoke when you first walk in!
