Do you "teach" your toddler during the day?
I'm just curious if anyone has a daily "lesson" for their toddler. We just play and read, but I was thinking maybe I should try something a little more structured. It would probably help me (I'm not really creative). Does anyone do this? Or am I crazy?

LOL, yeah I mean just when I'm at home with him. We go to music and swim classes so it's more for me to have some structure!! But thanks

Re: Do you "teach" your toddler during the day?
I feel that children "learn" the most while playing...I will do art and crafts with my DC's during the day ( not every day ) for somewhat of a more structured type of play...And when my DS asks me to teach him something and shows interest in a specific area I work with him on on that...I'm also big into music and movement with my kids ( it's amazing how much they learn from song)...This was pretty much my philospophy when I was active iin running the daycare as well

Its playdates at peoples houses where there is structure, a lesson, a craft, a snack, etc just like school. I think it works out better with other people involved. Maybe you can start you own group?

I have a designated art time. And I always go over numbers and letters with her. We draw shapes. And go over colors. I ask her how to spell her name. I used flash cards with her.....pictures, numbers, letters, colors.

Re: Do you "teach" your toddler during the day?
I'm not home with my son a lot during the week but when we are together I am just very mindful about what he might be able to learn. Sometimes I let him guide me as to what he is in the mood to do and sometimes I take out a specific toy with a lesson in mind. I don't plan ahead a specific activity for a specific time but I will often decide to try to teach a specific thing within the next few days.

Every moment you spend communicating with your child is a "teaching" moment.

My 2 year old loves books - she loves when I read to her. I know she is learning alot from the books and repeating after me. We also have flashcards of letters and pictures and numbers that we do every so often.

Re: Do you "teach" your toddler during the day?
My DS just turned two. I read with him, and I do little things that I think are "teaching" him:
- Whenever we walk up or down stairs, or put things away, I count out the stairs/items. He now can count to 20 and I think this helped.
- I talk to him all day long and narrate what I am doing, and what he is doing too. I think this is helping him learn how to say a lot of new things. Of course, I sounds like a crazy person talking to myself a lot
- I teach him colors every time he takes a bath with the different colored toys.
- Lots of singing and dancing- maybe it does not make a difference but we both love it!

Re: Do you "teach" your toddler during the day?
I do not have an exact daily structure. However we do learning activities. She really does learn most by playing and me being there to play with her. Some things we do throughout the day that are a bit more structured.

Re: Do you "teach" your toddler during the day?
Not at all. But I must be doing something right since my 3 year old came up to me with a happy face she drew and her name "Molly" written clear as day on it!
I leave the teaching to her 5 year old brother. He's the one that taught her how to write her name! LOL

I would count everything with her no matter what we were doing...emphasize colors, shapes....etc etc.
Lots of reading and singing.
