I don't like 529 plans because they can only be used for college and perhaps DD will not take that route. I also don't want to have a ton of money in a 529 and then she goes to a CUNY and doesn't use it all. So, we invest for her future, but not in a 529.
This is my opinion about 529 plans, also. I am saving money in an ING account for now. I was thinking, what if both twins don't want college at all, they would lose all the money, then, right?....there's no other young relatives I could give it to....
I didn't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has already been answered. We recently went through with setting up 529s for our kids, and we asked the same question, "what if they don't want to go to college".
The 529, at least the one we have, can be applied to ANY type of education, not just college. So, if college wasn't for them, but they went to a school to learn a trade, such as automotive, hair design, whatever - that money could be applied there.
