Re: Where is a good place to take photos??
What kind of photos are you looking for?
Nature? Urban?
I love natural or old building. Last year I went to the Kissam House for my photos - think old barn photos --- there is a thread where I posted my holiday card if you want to see the photos.
Caumsett is great.
There are a few places with graffiti walls, etc but if these are for a holiday card, it may not fit the theme.
Personally you can find a great place anywhere as long as you're looking. I think part of photography I love best is recognizing the beauty around you.
Here's a photo in a huge field of wildflowers:
or
maybe it's a small patch of weeds next to a busy road across from a ball field

Walking meditation is the goal at this extremely serene Japanese garden, set amid 4 acres of deep woodland. Step through the gate and you'll be awash in yamazato, or the transcendent feeling of a remote mountain hideout. Follow the trail, a symbolic path to enlightenment that takes you past a lake garden, as well as the shrubs and rocks that are essential to imperial garden design. The garden is the dream child of Ambassador Humes, who was inspired by a 1960 visit to Kyoto, Japan. Today, it's a refuge from the world. For a special treat, come to a tea ceremony held just a couple of days per month (no reservations required, but call for schedule).

Re: Where is a good place to take photos??
Most of my staged photos are around the house. It's amazing how many backdrops you actually have in your own house. That way, not only do you have photos of DC, but you have meaningful backdrops. "This was in front of the bedroom wall that Daddy painted". "Here's you in front of the house before we had all that work done to it" "Here's you sitting in front of your dresser.... before you and your sister destroyed it...."

Re: Where is a good place to take photos??
My fave is Sands Point because it's so varied. They have 3 beautiful old buildings, there are all the trails through the wooded preserve, you can walk down to the beach, the pool and gardens at Falaise are beautiful.
We did our engagement shoot at Bayard and our wedding pics at Planting Fields. They are both more laid back than Old Westbury Gardens with regard to photographers IMO.
I also like Nassau County Museum of Art. The formal garden is pretty, and they have some fun outdoor sculptures you can incorporate.
