Naming baby after ex?

DH and I were talking this morning about my fav girl name and I said Emma, but do not want to name (if we ever have one) our daughter that because that is his ex's name. He said that I am being ridiculous.

Any thoughts?

Re: Naming baby after ex?

i have to agree with you - i would NEVER EVER do that.

so many names i HATE because of who i associate them with... i would never want to name any child/pet, etc. with a name of someone i consider to be an ex in any way!

Re: Naming baby after ex?

I always say the past is the past... he's with you now. Obviously with you for a long time... you're married and pregnant with his child. I don't even think Emma was a thought with him when you were thinking of names. Besides, you're not naming DD after his ex... Chat Icon You guys just love the name.

My DS is.

Not on purpose, and it is also my husband's name. But I dated another Chris before my husband, my DS is a III.

Re: Naming baby after ex?

I think this one is different to everyone. I wouldn't want to name a child after DHs EX ...actually only one EX - he had a child with a college GF and she is forever in our lives. We get along well enough, but she has a very unique name, I wouldn't want to use her name - it would just be odd to me. The woman he dated before me had a very common name, I would have no problem using her name.

Re: Naming baby after ex?

DH and I have a 'no-ex name' rule too. Just like when you hear a certain name, you think of certain people.... like I LOVE the name Carrie... but I think the movie Carrie and it freaks me out lol. And if I named our daughter after his ex, it would remind me of her everytime I said, wrote, spoke my childs name. Cant do it!

Re: Naming baby after ex?

I guess I kinda want to change my answer... it does depend. If he dated her a long time ago and it was no big deal then yes... it's not big deal.

Now, if there's a lot more to it then I probably wouldn't.

Re: Naming baby after ex?

i wouldn't. we considered a name where DDs middle name would have been an ex of FH, and i still felt weird, even though it is a very very common name. also, i named one of our family dogs "Sandy" growing up. I later found out my dad's most serious ex gf was named Sandy and I thought that was weird and felt like my mom had to be uncomfortable. If I found out my own name was my dad's ex gf, i think I would feel terrible.

Re: Naming baby after ex?

depends. if it was a serious ex, than no way would i use that name. even if we were all friends... that's too weird for me.

but if it was someone i dated (or DH dated) for a month in high school i wouldn't care.

Re: Naming baby after ex?

i wouldnt do it if the name was an EX only.. but if a family member (grandparent) had that name i would do it.

my DSs middle name is after his grandfather but it also an EXs name of mine.

DH and I had the same rule! It made it VERY difficult finding a boy's "D" name we both liked Chat Icon
