Do you need to replant mums?

I just bought a bunch of mums. A couple very large ones in 11" pots and a lot of small ones in 5" pots. Can I keep them in these pots or do I need to replant them in the ground or bigger pots. In past years, my mums die very quickly and my mom mentioned that might happen because I don't replant them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

We planted our mums in the ground last year. We figured they would die and not come back. Well this year, they are about 4 feet tall and very full and colorful.

When the winter comes, we will have to cut them, otherwise, they will grow even taller again next year.

But yes, if they are in the gorund, they should come back. Not sure about pots......I'm going to doubt they will in a pot.

I've definitely seen mums come back year after year but I'm wondering if I need to change them from the pots they come from the nursery in (i.e. putting them in a larger pot or in the ground) for them to last the fall season.

They do better if you plant them in the ground. You can pinch them back in the spring and early summer to shape them (so they look like they came from the nursery)
