Cops probe skimmer found on bank ATM in Long Beach

Long Beach police are analyzing an electronic skimmer that had been installed on a bank ATM to steal account information from customers’ debit and credit cards.

Detectives are not sure yet how many customer accounts were compromised at the Chase Bank branch on East Park Avenue, Lt. Bruce Meyer said.

An alert customer noticed something fishy about the automated teller machine at around 7 p.m. Saturday and called the police, who recognized the device as a skimmer.

“We are now processing it to see if there's any information on it, to see who may be a victim,” Meyer said.

When a customer swipes a card through the illicit machine it retains the data. Then a pinhole camera installed in the skimmer takes video of the customer’s fingers on the ATM keyboard, capturing the PIN number, Meyer said.

The seized skimmer has a brand name imprinted on it and has a couple of fake screws — but is actually stuck to the ATM with an adhesive or tape, Meyer said.

“They make it look realistic to the ordinary patron. That's what they count on,” Meyer said.

Once the crooks get a customer’s card information and PIN they make new cards and hit the ATMs to get as much money as they can, as quickly as they can.

Whoever installed the skimmer probably chose Saturday evening because no bank officials would be there to notice tampering on the ATM, he said.
