CLEP Tests and Salary Differential

Has anyone used Clep tests towards their Salary Diff for NYC?

I just took a Clep test for my 30 and above and had them sent to the DOE. I just called to ask if they received them and I was told that it is confidential and they can't tell me. If they did get them then they are in the records room and if I want to use them towards my salary diff, I have to go to court street and make a copy of them or get new official print outs from the testing center. The DOE won't check for them when I send in my application. How does this make any sense!?!?!

So for those of you that used CLEP, can you just send the print outs that you get when you complete the test with your applicaion?

Why is nothing easy!?!

Yes I took Clep tests for a portion of my 30 above. with one of the tests i saved the print out showing my score and with one i had to specially request a copy from the CLEP office (or whatever it's called..maybe its the College Board) bc i lost it. i know when u take a CLEP test u can choose for the results to be sent to the DOE but that is pretty meaningless bc when you officially apply for the salary differential you have to send in the original documentation anyway.

hope this helps!

The CLEP test are 90 dollars at Suffolk or Nass. Community Colleges,...there are all different types. They count towards 3 credits, if you pass. But... you have to make sure if you chose a test, it doesn't link back to your BA or MA.

So if I majored in English I can't take any literature tests??

my coworker was an english major in college but decided to take english CLEP tests just to see if the DOE would give him the credit and lo and behold....they did. didnt even check. so even tho the rules say u cant get 30 above credit fr stuff u took as an undergrad, it is not necessarily so. of course, i suffered through taking a humanities test and a social sciences and history CLEP bc i was too chicken to break the rules. Re: CLEP Tests and Salary Differential

The rule is, you can't take a CLEP test for salary differential on any subject you took in college... UNLESS it's your license area. Really. How dumb is that? I was friendly with a woman who worked for the DOE and she told me the rule. She also informed me that the language CLEP tests are worth 12 CREDITS! 12! For under 100 bucks. I'm a Spanish teacher and took the Spanish one, and was almost halfway to my next salary step in under 2 hours.

The tests are all multiple choice. I took 3 of them, and I wish I had known about them since the first year I was teaching - I would have taken them all and gotten to my MA +60. Why not? They're cheap, and they only require the most basic knowledge of a subject for a passing score. I'm sure I know enough American history, European history, Algebra, etc. to get the equivalent of a "C" in an introductory-level course.

Oh! And here's another thing for your salary differential: if you don't have your master's degree yet, you can get a differential for credits above your bachelor's. Like, say you went to Binghamton and needed 136 credits to graduate with a bachelor's. But you had 144 credits for whatever reason (I did, since I took AP classes in high school and they counted towards my Binghamton degree). That's 8 credits over your bachelor's you can use for a differential. Really. You just need a letter from the - I think it's Registrar's?- office stating how many credits the college required for a bachelor's and how many you graduated with, with a copy of your transcript.

I almost felt like a scam artist when I taught in the City, getting all this money for stupid stuff like that! In LI it's so much tougher to get to differentials. I actually took a pay cut to come teach out here. Anyway, hope this info helps!
