Holy Pumpkins batman!!!
Some of you might remember the squirrel(s) that ate my pumpkin last Fall.
......well apparently those squirrels didn't remember where they buried all the seeds for over the winter because now we have a pumpkin patch in our front garden.
Can you transplant a pumpkin like this? I think it might kill my Daylilies that are right next to it.
But I do have to It's huge. We found it last week and it was a lot smaller a week ago. We got back from vacation and this is what we have now.

Re: Holy Pumpkins batman!!!
that's kind of awesome, actually!! do you have a large sunny patch you can put it? I'd just be afraid of hitting some of its roots when you pull it out.

We can move it to the backyard for this year probably. It's kind of awesome, but I know nothing about growing pumpkins.

I'm sure if I left it to grow, I could charge people to pick them.

Re: Holy Pumpkins batman!!!
i think the rule of thumb for transplanting any plant, is AFTER it blooms... but, i could be wrong.
i transplanted my whole yard and i had some winners, some losers.

Re: Holy Pumpkins batman!!!
they are pretty hardy I think you can transplant them. Last year we had gourds growing in the middle of our lawn because of the squirels too. good luck, i hope you get some pumpkins!

Re: Holy Pumpkins batman!!!
Don't worry about your daylily roots. If you're more than a foot out of where the leaves meet the ground, you're fine.
You should see what I've done to those poor things, and I've never lost a one.
Pumpkins? NO idea at all. I think it's google time!

Re: Holy Pumpkins batman!!!
Thanks KellyFG & Greenfreak.
I did Google late yesterday, and it said that they don't like there roots moved. I think we will just try to move it to the backyard and see if it lives or not.
Thanks everyone! I'll let you know if we get pumpkins or not.

Re: Holy Pumpkins batman!!!
Your daylillies will be just fine, they are a hardy plant. The pumkins roots are a bit testy as they are an annual.
If you are goign to move it, do it now and dig a hole as big as the leaves on top (the whoel size of the plant).
As for letting it grow, you just let it go in a sunny location and you should get a few pumpkins, good luck.

Thanks! That is going to be a really large hole. We will probably take care of it this weekend. Wish me luck!

Re: Holy Pumpkins batman!!!
Do you have to move it? That looks like a Stella D'Oro daylily next to it which is already done flowering, right?
I didn't know pumpkins were annuals. As long as you get the pumpkins off before the critters get to it, it won't come back again, right?

No we don't have to move it I guess. They are Daylilies, but they will come back again this summer. They flower throughout the summer. This is what the tag said. Daylily - "Happy Returns", Hemerocallis. They yellow ones (the ones by the pumpkin bloom first and go away, but come back again. And we have red ones in the backyard that just started blooming about 3 weeks ago. I have to get pics of them. They are huge. We got these Daylilies at the Garden Dept in Coram. Love them.

Pumpkins would be awesome, and I just want to say I envy all of you who have a green thumb... I can't even keep a house plant alive.

I don't think I have a green thumb, I just water my plants when they need it and prune the dead leaves when that happens. And of course buying plants that are easy to take care of both inside and out. Buy draught tolerant plants, plants that love the sun or shade depending on the area of course. You can do it, you just have to buy the right plants for you. GL!
