For Those Of You Who Have Empire/BlueCross BlueShield Come In, I Have Some Very Importat News For You

I just got a letter from them stating that as of August, 2009 Stony Brook University Hospital will no longer participate with them
This doesn't effect me directly as I had my baby 9 mos ago at St. Charles. But, for whoever this might affect and didn't recieve the letter yet I just wanted to let you know out of concern for the parents and pregnant ladies on here!
I just called Stony Brook to make sure it wasn't just with my job (I'm a NYC Teacher). They said, no, it's everyone!

You want to know the really screwy thing about this . . . guess what insurance Stony Brook provides their employees??? Yup! Many have Empire BC/BS.

I think you can still deliver there though, you just have to pay out of network fees, which could get hefty.

We got it today
Drives me nuts. My ped has rights at SB and St. Charles, and now we have to go to St. Charles???? I grew up in this area and I cannot tell you HOW many times we've been transferred from St. Charles and Mather to SB

I just called the hospital and after reading off the same info that's in the link above, they basically told me to call the # on the back of the card for more specific info.
Oh, and she told me to do squats and make the baby come out before 7/31.

Its hard to say, at first It hought it wouldnt affect you, now I think it might......Call your insurance and ask for sure.
This is not the 1st time that this has happened. I used to work for BCBS and this happened with Stony Brook TWICE. The first time it never went through. The second time it did for about a month, and then they signed the contracts and were all reinstated.
FYI- If you have any planned surgeries etc at a Stonybrook Hosp.. .....they WILL allow it and pay for it.
You just need to get approval from BCBS and have it on record.
Also if your in your 3rd trimester of PG, they will allow delivery. Call BCBS after the 1st if SB is dropped and arrange for an authorization for this.
HTH
ETA- I guarentee you it wont last...but it can cause havoc for a time if it happens.

Thanks - I just hung up with my benefits rep at BC/BS.
I'm lucky that I DO have out of network benefits if it comes down to it. The only difference is $2000 in my out of pocket expense. In network, I pay 10% UP TO $1500... Out of network, I pay 40% UP TO $3500.
That's fine for me... HOWEVER... the baby is going under DH's plan. A BC/BS EPO with NO OUT OF NETWORK BENEFITS.
Sooooo let's hope for
a) an agreement before 7/31
or
b) delivery before 7/31!

Glad I switched peds then! But, that stinks since I really love their pediatric emergency room and many of their specialists DD has seen. Hopefully they reach an agreement soon!

i work for stonybrook and have the empire state insurance.. the one that the ID starts with 890.... isnt that different from bc/bs?

Yes it is different. If it is called the Empire Plan ( thats the Empire State plan and not the same company at all)
