Allowing DD to fall asleep in my arms

Sometimes, (more often yes than not), I allow dd to fall asleep in my arms after she has been fed, burped and changed. It is part because I want to hold her, part because it works quicker than putting her down. Other times I rock her in the glider. My mother and MIL (very well intentioned) tell me I am spoiling her and when she gets older she will not be able to fall asleep on her own and I will pay the price then when I have to rock or hold a 1yr old to go to bed. They say to put her down and let her sleep on her own most of the time. I just want to hold her as much as I can. She is only 1month. I cannot bear to listen to her cry. What do you do? Am I spoiling her?

Nah i don't think so. Not right now. Maybe in another month or two... yes. But she's only 4 weeks old. You have some more time to hold her before you'll pay the price. Chat Icon Chat Icon

A one month old? You are not spoiling her. Now if you were talking about an 8 month old, yes, that is spoiling IMHO.

Continue you hold your DD, and eventually start to put her down more and more. It will also free up your hands to do other things.

My DS is 8 months old, and I do hold him once and a while, while he sleeps. Yes, I don't mind spoiling once in a blue moon, and I enjoy holding him and watching while he sleeps. I'm the mommy, I get to do what I want.Chat Icon

ITA with this, 100%. I held her as much as I possibly could when she was that young.

But within the next month or so, try to make it a rule that when you see her starting to get drowsy, put her down sleepy but awake.

Take it from someone who's learning the hard way--come 3 months or so, they start getting more used to it and then it's a tough habit to break. Chat Icon

Re: Allowing DD to fall asleep in my arms

I have been doing this with DD since day one. She is now 8 months old and though she does usually fall asleep in our arms when taking that last bottle before bed, sometimes she is awake when she finishes. Either way, we put her down in her crib and she falls asleep. We do not have a problem with her going to bed at night at all. Enjoy the time with DD. It really flies by soooo fast!! You are not spoiling her. You are loving her. Chat Icon

1 month is way too young! you are not spoiling her!

maybe wait till about 4/5/6 months.

i enjoy rocking my baby to sleep!and i know i will pay for it later but i will deal with that then..
she is growing before my eyes and this is the only way i can stop the clock..

someday i wont be able to rock her to sleep..

Re: Allowing DD to fall asleep in my arms

sometimes I rock my 2 year old to sleepChat Icon

every nap and night he fell asleep nursing on me. I just loved holding him, he just loved being held.

I really don't believe its a bad habit, its holding and rocking a baby that you only get one chance to do. but on some nights, it can be a real chore.

they are only babies once, I let my kid cry once at 12 mos. that monkey broke my crib in the first 4 minutes!

I don't like the whole crying themselves to sleep bit...its a bad way to end a great day. I would never want to cry myself to sleep. The dr at 12 mos pushed me to try, it did not work out.
