Need help with a large area rug

I really want to take the area rug from my dining room with me when we move. The beautiful great room where it would go has high cathedral ceilings and is 23 feet by 19 feet. It has the kitchen, dining area and a small sitting area. My problem is this. The area rug is the perfect size for my dining table and chairs. Any smaller would look silly. The two long sides are no problem but one of the shorter sides is flush against the hearth. The other side comes up against the base of the the island in the kitchen. When sitting at the island, the chairs would have to sit on the area rug.
The rug is 8 ft. by 10.5. The rest of the floor is wood.
I know it's wrong to put it there but on a scale of 1 - 10, please tell me how wrong.

It's your house and if you're okay with it, then it's not wrong at all IMO. Are you going to apply for Better Homes magazine cover or post it on HGTV Rate my Space? If not then do what looks and feels right to you. And, it's your rug and you own it so use it temporarily to protect your floors until you find a better one. Also, if the pattern allows, you may be able to have it professionally cut to a better size and bound.

I like your attitude! I just am trying to imagine all of this on graph paper now. I am going to be selling lots of things from one house before we move into the next. I was hoping to avoid selling the rug in case it does work.
Having it cut and bound may definitely be an option if I am not happy with it. I did not think of that.
