Has anyone here moved South...and then moved back?
Just curious...we live in NC, and we're pretty much stuck here for the next 4-5 years, but we are very seriously considering coming back up North...if you have any experiences, please share them!
We probably won't be coming back to LI, but eastern PA. It's where we REALLY wanted to move...but here were are, and I think we're regretting it a bit...

I did, and I'm ready to move back down south. When I was single, I lived down in NC. I moved back to NY about 6 years ago and haven't left again -- yet. 
It's a huge lifestyle change and it's definitely not for everyone. I happen to love PA, too. (We have family there, too -- my brother and my DH's parents -- though my brother is ready to move back to NY.)
I say live where ever makes you and your family happy.

I moved from NC (lived there 16 years) to NYC 6 years ago. I am originally from NJ. I would move back down south tomorrow, but DH is not interested-he is a born and bred New Yorker at heart.
Sorry you are regretting your decision to move to NC. You need to do what will make your family happy! I find the environment up here just to stressful, weather is harsher, people-in general-not as nice. When I go back home I can feel my blood pressure drop. I miss it.

I moved from a VERY big city to NC. After many years I moved to LI. I was bored to death and it was too much of a culture shock for me. Except for the weather which I do miss and the lower prices for housing, I don't miss a thing. I love LI. I cannot see myself moving back to NC. I would moved to FL but that's it.

what were the reasons for moving?
maybe if you go back to that thought process, you will feel less stuck
My family moved to fl in my early teen years. My mother never got use to it, was homesick...so they moved back to NY.
We also moved to Maine, then back to NY. After that was Seattle, then back to NY.
My dad has always wanted to leave NY, my mother agrees with him, then moves and misses NY.
You don't know until you tried. So be proud of trying.
What is in PA that isn't here? Sometimes I think PA would have been better for us, the drive would be so much shorter. My sister lives in Philadelphia...
Believe me, I am not the I HEART CHARLOTTE poster child...but it makes sense for right now.
I know a lot of girls who have moved down here, bought then sold and moved to an area that fits them better. Waxhaw is the 4th charlotte area I will be living in. Is the house the reason why you are "stuck" here?
It helps me so much to take overnight trips. We have gone to so many different places around Charlotte...it helps you appreciate the location.

I agree with Janice-I would think through what convinced you guys to move down here and then think if any of that has changed.
If you ultimately decide to move back north, I can't see the harm in that, you have to do what is right for you and your family.

raised on long island and then from age 17-22 i bounced around the carolinas during my time in college and after just living and stuff.
in the end i missed my family too much as well i met my future husband and decided to move back.
i miss the cost of living down south compared to NY -- as well as how everything is just nice and slow down there...but that's about it. in the end I'm a NY girl at heart. sometimes i get so mad hearing the prices of a place down there vs. up here--just seems so crazy!
i think that the most important thing is to just go with your gut...what feels right deep down is usually the right choice!

like others said, it's a personal decision. We love it down south and wouldn't dream of moving back, but you need to think about why you moved down to begin with. Do you want to be back north because of the new baby and are family/friends back north?
Or is it the lifestyle that you just don't love?

We went a little north, and still 90 minutes from my family, but we regret it. After our daughter was born we began to feel very differently, but we can't sell in the current climate.

I was pretty happy here until a few months before DD came along. Then I started getting pretty homesick. I don't think I want to go back to actually LIVING on LI, but I get sad when I think of the things that Ryleigh WON'T get to do because she lives here--fieldtrips to the Statue of Liberty, seeing Broadway plays on a regular basis, seeing her grandparents on a regular basis, and the list goes on and on and on...
As for me, I'm not sure that NC will ever truly feel like home. Things are SO different here. When my DH has conference calls during the day, and I hear that old familiar LI accent, I actually start to feel homesick--you forget what it's like to be around people who actually sound the way you do.
I don't know. I know that the economy is making it impossible for us to do anything about it right now...but I told DH that my gut is telling me not to stay here, and he seems to understand that.

That's exactly how I feel. We are SO far from my ILs and my father, not to mention all of our friends. That wasn't as huge a deal before the baby came. Now I wish we were closer.
As I said, we're not looking to move back to the Island, but somewhere that's just a drive away. We both lived in Bethlehem PA during college and we absolutely loved it. I'm not sure why I've really ignored that gut feeling that PA is where we are supposed to be.

that was my reason for coming back to NY from SoCal. I couldn't imagine my kids not being rasied near family and missing family gatherings and my friends not knowing my kids, etc

i moved down to FL to get away from ILS 3 years ago, DH got a job with NYPD a few months after living there and he wanted to move back. now that we live in NY again, he wants to move back down to florida haha. he drives me nuts. we lost alot of money moving down there then moving back. :-/

I have to say, i feel the same as you . I live in NC as well..for almost 3 years and it is just not where I want to be. We built a house... lived in 2 different areas....but I can not warm up to it and it just doesn't sit welll with me. I am a true NY'er and MISS everything about NY. To be honest, besides the home prices, the cost of living here is not much cheaper than NY. I feel like a lot is over priced here and the quality is terrible.
My DH loves it... but I can not see my daughter growing up with out my family and friends around, never getting to know them, missing all kinds of family functions, missing all of the 'ny attractions'.
With that said.. I have to say yes, I do plan on moving back 'home' in the near future. I think 3 years was a sufficient amount of time and if I am not loving it 3 years later... I don't think it is getting any better.

ITA with everything that you're saying. I'm not liking the "feel" of this place anymore. Of course, I know that once we head back North, our house will not be as extravagant as the one we have here--but does it matter? I want DD to know our family. As I said, I am not looking to move back to LI, but I do want to be within a reasonable distance so that we CAN come back for visits more often.
I know we're here for a few years more, but I can wait.
