Spinoff to smileys BC thread... BFing and BC?
Im going to try and EBF this baby...but terrified of getting pregnant with baby #3.. DH and I discussed that 2 is fine and in 3-4 years (kinda far away) if we have a house and are financially ready we would like to have a 3rd.
I didnt do BC while breastfeeding with dd.. Im thinking this time it may be the smart move, but afraid it will have some effect on the baby..
Did anyone take BC while Bfing and if you did what kind?

I thought while you EBF, you dont get AF, which also makes you a little safe on the not getting pg?

the only BC pill you can take while BFing is the mini pill - the one i am on is called jolivette. it does not prevent ovulation, it just prevents implantation.
the only thing is you have to take it at the exact same time every day for it to work, and even then, it is only 96-97% effective, as opposed to 99% with the regular pill.

That's the assumption that gets a lot of women in trouble  Problem is - you never know when your first AF after the baby will come - so you could ovulate before you expect it.
BabySammie - I would talk to your OB, there are a few BCP pills designed for BFing. The only thing I've heard about them is that you have to be very good about taking them the same time everyday, or they're not as effective.

How long was this been around? Im just afraid that it will have effect on my body for the future then.. In case we do choose to have 3rd, would it stop my body from being able to implant in the future when im off.

I was on the mini pill as of my 6 week pp appointment. I styed on it while BFing for 5 months and then switched back to my regular pill.

The pill itself doesn't effect the baby. The reason the put you on the mini pill is because the regular BC pill can majorly decrease your milk supply. You just need to be really good with the mini pill. You have to take it the same EXACT time every day to make it effective.

Like some of the others above: I took the mini-pill while EBF. I BF til he was a year and took Camila the entire time, then I switched to the regular pill.
I am HORRIBLE with remembering to take anything everyday, even medicine for my alleriges ai would forget.
I set an alarm on my cell phone that goes off everyday at a specific time. Then I take the pill.

I didnt BF my DD, I tried.
Since I stopped, AF came and honestly, doing the BD was not even something I thought about

i am fairly sure that this kind of BC doesn't have any side effects for either you or the baby... but i would definitely ask the OB as i do not yet have my medical license

I got the Mirena IUD after DC #2. It doesn't interfere with BFing at all and you can have it removed if/when you want to get pregnant again.

this is what I was thinking of doing.. or having the nuva (sp?) ring thing put in.. but some coworker freaked me out by telling me stories about them.. also freaked me out about taking BC pill also saying the hormones will effect the baby...
Not sure why I let this coworker get in my head since she has no experience in any of it.

Not sure why I let this coworker get in my head since she has no experience in any of it.
supposedly with the Mirena, the hormones stay in your uterus and don't get into your bloodstream like with the mini-pill. i got the mirena in august when DD was 4 months old and have been very happy with it so far. I'm also still EBF at 10 months.
