cloth diapers

is anyone using/planning on using cloth diapers?

dh and i would really like to do this, possibly using some environmentally friendly disposables for when we're traveling, etc. i was just looking for other people's experiences and possibly recommendations for brands, etc. i know i'm still early, but it can't hurt to be prepared, right?

also, how did you let friends/family know? i know buying diapers is a big gift that people usually love, but in our case we won't be using them and i don't think stores will accept returns on those (i could be wrong). i guess at the very least we could keep some just in case and donate the rest... it's just so awkward telling people what to buy (though that's not what i'm trying to do...) especially when you tell them you're planning on using cloth diapers and they kinds turn their noses up at you. anyways, off topic...

I did a lot of research about this because DH and I are both environmentally conscious individuals...

In the end, we decided that it may not be worth it because all the extra laundering we'll be forced to do which may also end up being bad for the environment. There's also no diaper laundering service anywhere near us so we'll end up having to do it using our machine or hauling the diapers to the nearest laundromat.

We have decided instead to concentrate on practicing E.C. (elimination communication). My mom taught me and my 4 siblings to go w/o diapers before we all turned 1 so I'm confident I can get some tips from her.

Yes, I want to use cloth diapers. I am going to look into using G diapers, which have a biodegradable lining, so its kind of like the best of both worlds. Unfortunately, they don't start until 8lbs, so I won't be able to use them for the first month or so. Instead for newborn diapers I will be using seventh generation diapers. They are still disposable, but don't have all the chemicals the other brands like huggies or pampers have. We had contemplated putting something on the shower invitations about being "green" but I didn't want people to think everything - like clothes, blankets, etc. had to be organic. Fortunately, we only got one package of diapers. My mom knows how I feel about the environment and bought us a bunch of packages of the 7th gen. ones.

The extra laundering to use cloth diapers does NOT cancel out the impact you will have unless you use a service. The services use all kinds of chemicals and tons of water to clean the diapers. If you do it at home, a few extra washes a week is better than the THOUSANDS of diapers you would put into a landfill.

I'm currently looking into G Diapers. There doesn't seem to be any diaper services around here so this seems like the next best thing.

gDiapers have no elemental chlorine, no perfumes, no smell, no garbage and no guilt. In fact, flushables are so gentle on the Earth you can even garden compost the wet ones in one compost cycle, approximately 50 – 150 days. Just think of the standing ovation you’ll get from the planet.

Our immediate families know, but I figure we'll wind up getting some disposables anyhow. They'll probably come in handy at some point.

When the baby is a NB I plan on using Green Mountain prefolds with a cover. They seemed to get the best reviews. I'm going to order some AIOs, Pockets, and fitteds for DH to use and for at night. I'm trying to get a variety so that we can see which work best for our baby.

So far it seems that the BG 3.0s have gotten the best AIO reviews, and they're one size which is great! They only come in solid colors, and my issue is all of the other ones out there with super cute prints..lol.
