just made a huge decision.. needs some help
Here is a brief summary of what has gone on. I am an RN manager on a unit and have made the decision to step down from managment back to a staff nurse. Besides all the petty politics that are taking place because poeple cant do their job. Any ways im a little nervous and dont know how i should go about wording it. I am mostly doing it because with the baby comming i dont want the stress of added paperwork such as evaluations, write ups and unhappy employees because they didnt get their way. and most of all because i miss being at the patients bedside. Do you think im making a crazy decision? Do you think im setting my self up for termination?

Re: just made a huge decision.. needs some help
My Mom did the same exact thing. She is an RN and was in charge of a unit. She couldn't deal with the politics of it all. I actually think you are making a wise decision in this ecomony. Not long after my Mom stepped down, the person who replaced her was laid off because they were consolidating management positions.
Good luck to you!!!!!!!

Re: just made a huge decision.. needs some help
I am planning to do the same thing. I am a MSW in a supervisory role. I want to come back as just a case manager after ML.......it will be more flexible and allow me to work from home more. I am going to speak to mgmt today about it, but know I run the risk of losing employment there overall.

You have very valid reasons for making your decision. I would stick with it. You'll likely be a lot more happy!

It is YOUR decision and you have to do what makes you happy - I do not think that this is setting yourself up for termination - as long as you do what you are supposed to do in the other position.
I have said this to DH many times myself. I am an Assistant Principal; thisis my 6th year and I often say that I would LOVE to go back to teaching in the classroom - I could leave at 2:40 - not 4:00 and just focus on my class; not 17 classes.

Re: just made a huge decision.. needs some help
as far as wording goes, i would NEVER in a million years make it a "im having a baby and just dont want things to be too hectic for me" issue...
i was planning on doing this at my office before my accident as well, and i was sticking to the "i miss being an integral part of my patients care" issue..

As far as wording it goes, do yourself a favor and keep it ALL about what you MISS about the every day job of 'just' being a nurse. - Caring for the patients, etc.
DO NOT mention anything about the baby, the additional responsibility of paperwork, evals, etc. or the stress. The negative things can never help you in the short or long term. -

Re: just made a huge decision.. needs some help
Any updates? I put in my request and it looks like they are going to most likely honor it. I did the "I miss working one on one with the clients and direct social work/case management piece I can't really do in my current role" piece.
Even if they want to give me a pay-cut, I figured out that it's probably only going to be $50.00 less a paycheck.
I think I can convince them not to cut my pay though *fingers crossed*.
I think this role will be so much better for me, as a mom. I can't be a mom AND work a management position anymore.
