Pregant looking for a new job

SO as some of you may know I have been with my company as a paramedic and 911 dispatcher for going on 4yrs now, and it has not been the best. This last 2 yrs since I came off of the road and into the communication center I have struggled a lot and now I am done. In the last 2 days I have just had it. My only saving grace was that when I went off on maternity leave I would come back part time, but it looks like they wil not have any openings for part time so I would have to go back to the road and that's not really an option due to previous injury. I started applying for hospital positions but I am concerned that my pregnancy will hurt me. I am currently 10w2d. The positions I am applying for are all part time and at the hospital I used to work for so I don't really think it will/would be an issue but I'm not sure how to approach this. If I get an interview do I tell them then or after i'm hired? I appreciate the help you ladies have given and I need it again. I am so miserable where I am that I just don't see any other option. TIA

Re: Pregant looking for a new job

As for actually getting hired, it would obviously be easier to get hired if you didn't tell them you are pregnant. At the same time, I'm sure your future employeer will not be happy to know you will be going on maternity leave after only working for 6 months. I've heard of companies getting burned by training new hires just for the girl to go on maternity leave.

If I were you, I'd go on the interviews and not mention the pregnancy. When given the offer, tell them you are pregnant.

Re: Pregant looking for a new job

Take it from first hand experience....DO NOT TELL THEM YOU'RE PREGNANT!!!! Not sure if you followed my story on here, but I was without a job for nearly 4 months b/c I felt it was "the right thing to do" when interviewing. I had NEVER been turned down for any position before. Not in EMS, law enforcement, hospitality, medicine.....nothing. I went on at least 14 interviews and told them that I was expecting---and not one called me back. The last interview I decided enough was enough and decided to omit my pregnancy in the conversation (I was 22 weeks at that point and could barely still hide it), I was hired in a matter of minutes after the interview. The administration found out about 2 weeks later, and nobody had any problems with it. I'm now happily working as a medical assistant in a physician's office (basically functioning as a medic in a controlled atmosphere)---injections, EKG's, B/P's, vitals, etc....and the staff is excited for me and my baby.

So, please.....use this opportunity to get a new job while you can!! And DO NOT TELL THEM!!! My thought was this after being turned down so many times...in an interview, you're not required to inform your employer of a diabetic or cardiac history, so why should you "have to" inform them of a pregnancy. Just keep in mind, that especially in a hospital, you may need an "employment" physical.....so, it will probably come up then, but they can't "not hire you" based on a pre-existing pregnancy after the initial offer. :)

Good luck!! And Congrats!!!

Re: Pregant looking for a new job

Thank you ladies.........I know this is poor timing, but I really am at my wits end here and I need to do something else. Plus any position I take or interview for will be part time. I would NEVER interview or accept a full time job only to go part time 6months later.....

You don't owe anyone anything -
it's a JOB that you are qualified for - it's not like they're doing you a favor by hiring you so just get that idea out of your head !! Chat Icon

Don't tell them anything about your pregnancy until you accept a position.

Re: Pregant looking for a new job

Its definitely stressfull contemplating a job while pregnant. I found myself interviewing for jobs at 21weeks after the company I had been with for 3 plus years went out of business. Since I was futher along and showing I couldn't hide it and told them in my first interview and I ended up getting the job. They told me in the interview that they are looking at my skills not my physical status. I'll only be there 3 months before going on maternity leave.

If you're not showing I would probably keep it quiet until you are offered the position and then after accepting disclose it then. The more honest you are up front the less tense the working relationship will be.

Good luck.
