i see so many of you with dc's around my ds's age (18 months) transitioning to a toddler bed/twin and i wamnt to keep josh in a crib for as long as he'll stay in one.

he's a bad sleeper and very active and would try to get out all the time and never fall back to sleep. i dread transitioning.

i even have baby #2 on the way when he turns 23 months and i'm buying another convertable crib!

is this aweful? is everyone switching to a bed asap?

tia!

I plan to keep him in as long as possible.

The only way he would be moved into a bed would be when I get pregnant and find out if the next one is a boy. The baby would then get Jack's convertible crib because I would buy one of those bunk beds from Pottery Barn for the two of them to eventually share.

So - basically - I still need to get pregnant, have a baby, and then if it's a boy when that baby is 3 months old he will take Jack's crib....so -- at this rate he'll be in it until he's 5 Chat Icon

Think I've given this any thought?! Chat Icon

I don't plan on moving my DS anytime soon.

BUT if I was pregnant and my kids were going to be the same amount of time apart as you, I'd get a bassinet for baby#2 and wait a few months and then get DS a bed and move the new baby into the crib.

Nope, it's not bad.

All of the BTDT mommies I know (who didn't need the crib for the next child) told me to keep them in as long as possible.

Our plan is not until they are 2 1/2.
They'll get their own rooms and big boy/big girl furniture next summer.

DS is 2 1/2 and still in his crib and I'm planning to leave him there longer. We actually went and got a second crib (used from a friend) for DD (5 months).

I like not worrying about DS because he is in the crib, and he loves it so I see no reason to change.

Syd was 20 months old when Casey was born and there was no way I was putting her in a crib at that point.

She's 2 yrs 8 months and still in it... I think I may have to move her soon though, she's getting way too big... but I am dreading it!

My dd will be 2 1/2 next month and I have no intention on putting her in a toddler bed until she starts climbing out of her crib. She is a horrible sleeper. Cries for at least 10-15 min every time I put her down (for naps and bedtime). I know once she goes into a toddler bed I can forget about taking naps.
when she starts showing an interest in climbing out of it then I'll change her crib into the toddler/daybed.
I wouldn't feel bad if I were you.

DD was in her crib until a few weeks ago, when she climbed out 3 times in a row! Chat Icon

.... She's 2.5yo.

ETA: I forget the exact age, but we switched DS from crib to daybed a little while before DD was born, so he would be the "big brother" in his "big boy bed". They are exactly 3 years apart, so he must have been 2.5+ when we switched.

I would wait as long as possible.

Our plan is to keep DS in his crib until #2 comes so he will be at least 2+years. Then buy a couple more months with the bassinet.

Cheaparese over here too. This is exactly what we plan on doing-I just can't see buying a whole other crib set to carry us through a few months.

ETA: To original poster, I don't think it's bad to keep him in as long as possible if you don't mind buying another crib, why not?

Sarah was in a crib until she was almost 3, she was very happy in there and never tried to climb out. Now she's in a toddler bed but we have to leave a bedrail up, she sleeps right up against it like she's still in a crib.

Andy will be 2.5 at Christmas and I have no plans to move him out of his crib any time soon. He's never tried to climb out. It can take him an hour to fall asleep so I know he'd be wandering around if he was in a bed right now.

I am expecting in June. Bryan will be 2.5 years old.
Our plan is to transition him in early May. Until then, he's staying in the crib.

Same here Chat Icon until 2 - then he moves into a bed regardless. I already have his big boy bedding and curtains for his new room!

But for now he stays in the crib...he seems to be doing well and daycare has him sleeping in a cot for naptime so they will make my transition even easier.

My DS is 3 and we have his big boy room all set up but just haven't made the transition yet, and thats with baby # 2 coming in 8 weeks...We are going to do it within the next few weeks so my DS doesnt feel displaced when the baby comes- otherwise I see no reason for switching him out of it, unless he's not fitting etc...For all intent and purposes, its a bed with rails so switch when you feel comfortable IMO...For us, we are just too lazy to install another monitor and gate at his door- LOL Chat Icon

My boys are 2 years old, and have NO plan of moving them to a toddler bed for a long time. If he is fine in his crib...leave him there for as long as you can.

My DD is 18 months and she's in a crib and there's NO WAY I'm making the switch to a bed anytime soon. But I'll go you one better...my older DD turned 3 in September and she's STILL in a crib! Chat Icon Chat Icon I ordered a twin bed for her, but you know it can be awaiting furniture deliveries--forever!

IMO, I don't understand why anyone would switch to a bed at 18 mos. unless the child were climbing out of the crib. Or I guess if they were expecting #2 and didn't want to buy another crib (although I did and my DDs are 20 mos. apart).

Our family rule:

DC's should stay in crib till they can climb out. (same goes for the stroller)

Our DS tried to climb out at 12 months and then he got in trouble so he never tried again. I plan to transition DS at 3 because he will have new room and he is looking forward to it because we always talk about the "big boy bed in the green big boy room".

He says he will wear underwear and no more diapers when he has a big boy bed. We are really hyping it up as a big milestone for him.

OMG... listen to me.
The longer. The BETTER.

I converted the crib just after Jake turned 3. Sigh. That's all I have to say. I should've left him in the crib until he was 6. Chat Icon

Re: is it bad to want to keep my ds in a crib for as long as possible?

I kept all my older DD's in their cribs for as long as possible. It was simply a matter of knowing they were in the safest place possible. The idea of a toddler on her own in her own room scared the cr*p out of me, especially with 7yr old DD.... she was into climbing and throwing herself off of things!

DS is over 2 and still in the crib. I will be moving him soon into a toddler bed only because I am expecting #2 in March.

Re: is it bad to want to keep my ds in a crib for as long as possible?

We JUST transitioned Bella at 3 years and 2 months. She was fine in her crib, but she was getting a bit big for it.

I was scared and concerned and also a little sad...but she did WONDERFULLY and has been in her big girl bed for two weeks and doing amazing.

She doesn't get out of bed unless we come get her and she stays there throughout the night.

We'll see if that changes, but so far so good.

Re: is it bad to want to keep my ds in a crib for as long as possible?

We converted DD's bed into a daybed when she turned 2. I am due in April so I figure this will give us a couple of months for her to be comfortable this way and then into a twin she will go. I want her to be out of the crib a while before baby #2 comes. I don't want her to think she got the boot!

Even if I wasn't pregnant with #2, I would have transitioned her though. She was starting to try to climb out and I just envisioned the worst with that.
