labor question

My water never broke so I dont know the answer.

Once your water breaks and you are in the hospital, is it true you cant walk around at the hospital? My friend is in labor and stuck in her bed.

Re: labor question

They didn't let me, but my labor went pretty quickly so I really didn't want to.

Re: labor question

probably becaus ethey want her on the monitor. is she trying to speed up baby's descent? She can try leaning with her arms over the bed and legs bent and on the floor. I read that the way we are delivered here flat on our backs, makes for the slowest and most intervention ridden labors

Re: labor question

I have no idea why they wouldn't let you walk around but I have only seen midwives so my birth experience might be completely different than someone who sees and OB.

I would die if I was in labor and stuck in bed.

Re: labor question

My water broke at home and when I went into the hospital I was only 1cm dilated and the baby was very high. The nurses wanted me to walk around but when they called my OB she said no way. I guess the umbilical cord could prolaspe and cause a problem.

Re: labor question

Most OBs and hospitals prefer to keep a woman in bed while in labor. Totally unecessary if labor if progressing normally with no complications but they do so it.

this is one of the reasons I am using a midwife so I am not confined to a bed and can walk around and deliver in whatever position is comfortabel for ME not what is convinient for a doctor.

Re: labor question

I thought once the water is broken that a woman would be suseptable to infections. Maybe that's why they would be hesitant to allow her to walk around.

Re: labor question

I was induced and my dr ended up breaking my water on the 2nd day (thank god b/c it was the only thing that threw me into active labor). I never even asked if I was allowed to walk around b/c it was sorta nasty "down there" Chat Icon . When your water breaks it's not like it all gushes at one time. So, I was "gushing" over a period of hours. Not to mention the "bloody show" that takes place as well. So, for me, walking was not in my best interest.

Re: labor question

I took my CBE class last weekend and they said that the doctors, but moreso the NURSES prefer you stay in bed at the hospital because it makes THEIR lives easier, especially if they have to oversee a bunch of patients.

However, it is your RIGHT to get up and move about if you are able and the doctor says it's okay. It also could make the labor process move significantly quicker.

I think they were saying just lying in bed could add another TEN hours onto your labor.Chat Icon It's not natural really if you think about it throughout history...........

Remember though that in the end though your doctor will probably have the "final say".
