Auto purchase sales tax
anyone know the rate?
I am about to register my car at the DMV, but I have to pay the sales tax (we bought in MA and they don't do temp regist or charge sales tax)
I want to transfer the funds into checking, but I need to know how much about to transfer. thanks!

same rate as anything else you buy. what is it 8.875 or 8.50? I forgot what it is since I bounce around shopping.

Re: Auto purchase sales tax
Did you lease? finance? bought the car in full? If so, you need to multiply the value of the car times 8.375% to get the amount that you will have to pay.

ok, that may be the rate. It depends what county you live in and what your sales tax rate is..
You can google it.

Re: Auto purchase sales tax
Transfer 9% just to be on the safe side and bring a blank check to DMV with you...
You didn't pay ANY sales tax? Not even MA sales tax?
Because if you did:
If you paid out-of-state sales tax, show the out-of-state dealer bill of sale. The bill of sale must show the purchase price and the amount of out-of-state sales tax paid to the dealer. Use form DTF-804 to claim credit for the state and local sales taxes you paid in the other state. This process can reduce the amount of your NYS sales tax if NYS and the other state have an agreement about sales tax.

Re: Auto purchase sales tax
Did you trade in a car? I think the value of your trade in can be used to reduce the purchase price of the car and therefore reducing the amount of sales tax you pay!
