How can i get help with my out of warranty Mac?
I'm so annoyed..of course my apple care ran out a month ago. Now the computer just shuts off. No battery warning, doesn't go into sleep mode, just shuts off, even if there's a lot of time left on the battery meter. I called Apple and they said they couldn't help me b/c my AC ran out. I think I need a new battery. How can i get help?

Re: How can i get help with my out of warranty Mac?
does the battery charge when the computer's plugged in?
does the computer run fine if it's plugged in?
was this very sudden, or did you notice shortened battery life over the last few months?
it could be something related to the components within the computer, not just the battery... which is fatal.
don't spend the $$ on service until you figure out whether it's related to the battery or the computer overall.
if the computer will shut down when plugged in, it's the computer. if the battery won't charge at all, it could be the battery OR the computer.
Wonder if there's somewhere you could externally charge your battery and see if it holds a charge. (some service center).

The battery life seems to be declining.
It does NOT shut off when plugged in. it's the battery going dead when it says it has time left.
Right now tit's plugged in and says "calculating" instead of a time even though it's been plugged in for awhile

in that case, I would just risk the $$ and order a new battery. it likely will resolve the problem.
if you call a service center, you'll pay for them, and THEN you'll have to flip the $$ of the battery......

Re: How can i get help with my out of warranty Mac?
My DH actually had some big problems with his out of warranty Mac - he brought it to the Genius Bar at the Mac store and they were super nice to him - he was only out by like a week or two and they sent it out and fixed it free of charge. It's worth giving the Mac store a shot!
Good luck!

Re: How can i get help with my out of warranty Mac?
is it a powerbook G4? My battery died early and I just always plugged it in... when the plug broke (dont ask) I did some research on replacement batteries and found out that there was a RECALL on my specific battery and I received a new one, free of charge.
sadly, mac batteries don't really last long..

I was also going to suggest you visit the Mac Store. When I broke my LCD, the *genius* that helped me gave me a # of a place that fixes macs for 1/2 the price. and with free shipping.
Sadly, I don't have that number anymore but I'll look for it.
