Can anyone recommend places to see and, more importantly, places to STAY, in Arizona? (Preferrably central and/or northern Arizona)

Definitely visit Sedona, its just gorgeous! The Pink Jeep tours there are a lot of fun! The Grand Canyon is amazing and i stayed at the Quality Inn right outside the canyon. Very nice hotel.

Re: Arizona

This is sort of a non-recommendation - I found Flagstaff disappointing. There isn't a whole lot in northern AZ (besides the Grand Canyon of course, which I haven't been to yet, but I'm sure is awesome).

As for central AZ, I recommend Sedona wholeheartedly, and I've also heard good things about Prescott.

Flagstaff is a very quaint town...not really exciting...but it's a great pitstop to the Grand Canyon and Mount Humphreys (nothing like being in snow and then less than 2 hours later in shorts)

DH grew up about 30 m from Prescott and I'm not sure there is much to do there. A lot of stores, but I don't think much else. My niece goes to college there, I can ask her more details, but from what I've seen, there isn't much...

If you want a ranch experience you can try Los Caballeros in Wickenburg - old old town - with #4 golf course in AZ. Wickenburg is also home to the Meadows rehab, which takes in high profile clients, b/c it's in the middle of nowhere, and also the home to the most millionaires per capita (although I think that will change as they are building exponentionally and the middle class from Phoenix will counteract it) - Dan Quayle's parents are there (and his brother was DH's football coach)

the best is the drive down from the grand canyon to sedona on route 89! not for the weak of heart, but an great sight!

Re: Arizona

DH and I had our one year anniversary trip in Sedona last November. We loved all the local ruins, our favs were:

Montezuma's Castle-just South of Sedona

Walnut Canyon-native american cliff dweller ruins, this was one of our favorites and it's near Flagstaff.

Grand Canyon-we did the helicopter tour, it was fantastic. I think the company we used was Maverick.

We stayed in a time share so we did all day trips, but we visited the El Tovar, it's the hotel right on the rim of the Canyon. It was very inexpensive in the off season. We asked when we got there out of curiosity. We would have stayed but we had no change of clothes.

Also, we did the meteor crater, but felt it was a waste of money. It's expensive because it's privately owned and it's just a big hole in the ground. Also, the petrified forest national park was just ok. We thought that the description we got of it didn't match the actual place.

We used a Frommers book to help us map our days and it helped.

In all seriousness, be careful driving at night, my DH and I totalled our rental car driving south on interstate 17 one night heading home. We hit an elk. Thankfully, we were fine, but it was pretty scary. They migrate certain times of the year, and there are no lights on the interstates. Just a word of warning.

ETA: Also visit Jerome, it's an old mining town that was abandoned and now it has been reclaimed by people who opened really cute shops. There is also a mining museum there now. We really liked that too.
