What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
MIL keeps hounding me because she says DH was using a spoon to feed himself by the age of 1.
Thanks for your answers!!!!

Re: What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
My son can put the spoon into his mouth correctly, but doesnt always get the food on the spoon....if I put the stuff on the spoon, and hand it to him, he will put it in his mouth....its a hard concept having them always get the stuff on the spoon (things fall off easily) He is 16 months....I would say hes been able to do this since about a year...

Re: What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
IT would probably be difficult for my dd to know how to use a spoon at this age being that I never have time to give her a spoon before she attacks her tray like a wild starving animal, too fisted shoving food in her mouth . Seriously, I use her highchair tray as her plate since she has been self feeding. She just turned one, and I am trying to incorporate a plate into the eating scenerio. SHe has eaten things like mashed potatos and turnips off a spoon indendently, but I put the food on it and she eats it almost like an icecream cone.
If I had had the time to teach her, I bet she may have been able to learn, but it is not a big concern of mine. My son learned in a reasonable amount of time and I am sure my dd will too.
NOw, at age one I will start working on this, but I need to buy suction cup bowls or something. BY the way, my mother has been gining me a hard time about this too. I think she is afraid I am raising a wolf. She worried about my son too and he knows how, he just chooses not to like most of his friends.

DD is turning 2 in a few weeks and sometimes still has a hard time with a spoon. She knows how to use it and tries often but she tilts the spoon a lot & the food will sometimes fall off (cereal, soup, rice). She's a pro with pudding & things that stick to the spoon.

OH NO NO NO!!!!!!! MIL says DH was able to scoop his own food correctly and feed himself by the age of 1. DS can easily put the spoon full of food in his mouth, if I load it. But MIL says he should know how to correctly eat with tableware with no help from us. He's 13 months old!!!!!

Re: What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
13 months or so
ETA, I doubt your MIL is lying. My grandmother said we all used utensils at 1. I think as parents, we tend to not want food all over the floor, walls and babies hair, so WE feed them hence the reason that many don't know how. I know if it's something messy and we are out, I feed her. But she can load her spoon, hold it and feed herself.

Re: What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
I'm pretty sure your MIL is wrong.
DD is almost 15 months and is nowhere near eating independently with a spoon. If I load it up for her, she can feed herself, but whenever I let her try herself, she usually ends up sticking her whole fist in with the spoon.
My *guess* is that by between 18 months and 2 years is when this skill would normally be developed.

Re: What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
DS is almost 14 months and can use a spoon and fork. He does not always get the food on the utensil and will resort to using his fingers if he can't get it on the utensil. Sometimes he will just bring the empty utensil to his mouth when he misses the food on his tray.

Re: What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
Caden can use a spoon and a fork. But he's very messy very very messy....and his spoon skills are better if the menu contains sticky foods. He'd never be able to feed him self soup or peas for examples...
I'd just give him the spoon and fork and let him play with it...he'll pick it up from watching you.

Re: What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
Kelly, we've been giving Gracie the spoon for a few months & she can now load it (a lot of the time using her fingers) & then get it to her mouth, but she's very messy. I wouldn't stress AT ALL

I'm not stressed. She just hits a nerve when she makes little comments about how he is NOT loading his own spoon.

Re: What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
Kaitee was 11 or 12 months. But she was still messy but the food would make it in her mouth. By 15 months she could do it with almost no mess. Now at 2 she doesn't make a mess. Brooke is 11 months now and she can make the food into her mouth. She has trouble scooping the food up but I think its because I don't let her try often because I don't want to clean up the mess

Re: What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
I know that part of the reason that my son doesnt put the food on the spoon that great, is because I really don't let him. I know its terrible, but I don't like the whole, get messy while you eat deal...I know I need to get over it and just let him do it....maybe your post will be my inspiration, and I will try it today

Us too. DS will be 2 next month and still hasn't mastered the spoon. Hey, as long as he's eating, I don't really care how the food makes it into his mouth.

Re: What age did your DC correctly use a spoon?
Every child is so different. At about 13 months DD was eating pretty well with a spoon or a fork, and by 15 month she had mastered eating spaghetti with a fork. I think it all has to do with how interested they are in that particular task.
