what to do to help fix my credit, so it doesn't ruin my fiance's?

I just got engaged, to a really amazing man. We've been living together for over a year, so our finances are an open book. I have terrible credit-no bankrupcies, but I defaulted on credit cards, made late car payments, the works. I hit my overdraft and then couldn't pay it back, and ended up owing chase a lot of interest, etc. I eventually paid off my car, my bank account is all straightened out and I think I paid off everyone else, I haven't been contacted by any creditors in the last few years. My only debt now is my student loan, which is under 15.000. My fiance knows all about my bad credit....here's my question...does anyone know if there's anything that I can do to help make sure my credit doesn't ruin his?

Probably the best thing would be to make sure you keep everything separate until your credit gets better, if you don't want to affect his credit. Like no joint accounts of CCs for awhile.

If he has good credit, he could always add you to one of his accounts and continue maintaining his credit, that could possibly help you out.

you can't ruin his credit

my husbands credit is no where near as great as mine

I have added him to a few accounts- which helps his score- but doesn't hurt mine

you can fix your credit by paying everything on time, not opening any new accounts

ITA.

The best way to fix your credit is to (1) make sure you are current on all accounts and have paid off any charge-offs and (2) pay all your bills on time every month from now on.

You'll get there, but you won't ruin your FH's credit.

It's real simple... don't default on anything that has his name on it.

Your credit can't "hurt" his. Even if he adds you as an authorized user on one of his credit cards it's not like his credit will drop because there is a "bad person" on his credit card.

Just make your payments and over time your credit will improve.

Yup, I did that. It's called piggybacking and I added my husband (then boyfriend) to my card to improve his credit.

They like to see you carrying a balance but paying more than the minimum payment a month.

If you have an excellent credit history and no debt, they are more willing to "forgive" that you aren't carrying balances.

The way that I improved my non-existant credit was charging work related travel expenses and paying them off about a month later.

Basically, they want to see you using the card and proving that you have the ability to buy and pay off responsibly.

Good luck!
