Spinoof to what you can/can't have during pregnancy
I'm pretty liberal in what I do and don't consume during my pregnancy. I'm also not big into all the anti-bacterial sparys and soaps out there.
Most of the "theories" on what pregnant women should or should not eat are based on a select few cases. Such as not eating soft cheeses when pregnant was because a group of pregnant women got together and they all got food poisoning and they attributed it to a wheel of Brie that they had been eating. But no studies are actually doen to validate any of this. This is why soooo many different practitioners have differnet views on what you can and can't eat and there isnn't a standard.
If you look at what most European women eat/don't eat and what is recomended it is way more liberal that the US.
ALso, 20 years ago our mothers ate and drank what they wanted. Some enjoyed cocktails a few times of week while others smoked.
I wonder sometimes if the increasing paranoia of germs in our enviroment and of moderating so much of our food is leading to children with lower immune systems, because they aren't exposed as much to bacteria and therefore leading to children that are sick more often.......
Just a thought I 've been pondering....

I have to say I fully agree with you. I have friends who rubbed their kids down w/ antibacterial soap constantly, would wash the binky everytime it fell, sterilized everything & now all 3 kids have allergies, psorarisis(sp) and seem to be sick often.
Years ago, our moms drank pots of coffee a day; smoke and drank during pregnancy. Sure they didn't know any better and I wouldn't go to that exteme, but my motto is everything in moderation, as far as what I eat during pregnancy.

well, I can comment on this last part of your post.... becuase it's a pet peeve of mine. SURE, you create a near-sterile home environment, and don't expose your baby/toddlers to enough germs, and they will have TONS of allergies.
Allergies develop when an immune system is understimulated... especially when you're young. There are virtually no incidents of allergies in regions with poor sanitation... becuase the immune system is definitely stimulated sufficiently (if not too much!).
I'm also very anti- anti-microbial cleaning product. I think it's almost a mental illness in this country at this point with commercials encouraging nervous parents to sterilize every household surface including children's toys in harsh chemicals so 'they're safe'. uhhh, that's not safe! it's covered in chemicals, and they'll surely put it in their mouths!
Similar lunacy are the antimicrobial gels at the gas station. there are no bugs in gas! it's all petroleum chemicals. smearing MORE chemicals on top is not going to remove the first batch of chemicals.
worst thing about all of these antibacterial soaps (other than our exposure to chemicals) is that they're neurotic overuse is producing new strains of antibiotic-resistent bacteria... so now, when we DO get sick, we don't even have medications to treat ourselves anymore!
I assure you, there are no anti-microbial cleaners or soaps in our home......
