I literally can't take this anymore.
I am 25 weeks today. I still have a long way to go.
My sciatica is now so bad that I can't put any weight on my right leg. This has been since yesterday morning. Meanwhile, school has been back in session for two weeks now, and I've been absent for 3 of the 9 days. It's looking like I'm going to have to take disability leave.
But, work aside--how the hell am I supposed to function for the next 15 weeks? My bedroom is upstairs. The washing machine is upstairs (which USED to be my saving grace) and it literally takes me 5 minutes to walk 15 feet from the livingroom into the kitchen. I can't get up from the toilet without assistance (and if I sit there for more than 30 seconds, my entire leg fills with pins and needles and then falls asleep).
I am in so much pain, I can't even convey it. Painkillers aren't helping. I've been to 10 doctors, and they all refuse to touch me because I'm pregnant.
I once wanted to have 3 children--but I'm thinking this is it for me.

I don't have sciatica but threw my back out and horrible pain for a while. My chiropractor was a saving grace! He is certified to treat preggo women and is awesome! Try it out!!

Here's a list of what I've tried:
2 chiropractors (my old doc in NY and one here in NC)
2 Steroid dose packs
Heat/ice
Physical therapy
Acupuncture
Going to an orthopedist
Going to a pain management specialist
Going to a neurosurgeon
Flexeril
Extra-Strength Tylenol
Darvocet (a low-dose painkiller--I take 4 a night)
I am completely out of ideas. They all just look at me and say "sorry, I can't help you because you're pregnant".

Maybe Tylenol with codeine instead or Darvocet? I was prescribed them today for my headaches so they're safe...

My OB actually just prescribed that for me--but I've been afraid to fill the script. Does it make you feel loopy? I am so deathly afraid of feeling drugged--especially since I'm a teacher and it would probably be fairly noticeable.
Then again, I talk as though I've been going to work when I haven't been able to.

Re: I literally can't take this anymore.
Oh Beth my heart is breaking for you! Honestly look into your benefits left and right with a fine tooth comb. If you are literally disabled (which it sounds like you are) you may be entitled some home help. I know when my mother was really injured she was able to get help through insurance. Make lots of phone calls and get everything you are allowed to get.
Are crutches an option or would that not even help.
Did you ever find a "real" pain specialist? I went to mine and she was willing to give me Oxycontin and wean me down closer to delivery. I don't feel I'm at that point so I'm not taking it but there are doctors who will treat you, you just have to find one who really understands what chronic pain really is.
FM if you need to talk, vent, cry whatever.

Maybe you should try it...especially if you end up taking disability.
My heart is so heavy for you after reading all of your posts. I really hope that this works for you.

Beth it's probably worth trying. Maybe try it over the weekend. It's really not a whole lot stronger than the Darvocet so I don't think you'd feel overly loopy on it.
IMO it sounds like you need some time out of work and specialist who is going to realize you are basically crippled in pain at this point.
Hang in there

Re: I literally can't take this anymore.
ugh that sound horrific
I googled "sciatica pregnancy" and found a couple sites suggesting exercises and positions that may help alieviate a smidge of the pain. Your case does sound rather severe, though
Sciatica is caused by the baby's head pressing on the sciatic nerves, so it's very dependent on fetal position. You may not have it at all in subsequent pregnancies... but I will admit, your story scares the daylights out of me
there's a super naive part of me that thinks if you get on the floor on all 4's, you may be able to temporarily aleviate some pain, just becuase the baby would hang down towards your navel (away from your spine), and the nerve would remain tucked in your pelvic area towards your spine.... not like you could conduct your life on your hands and knees, but if you have a moment of excrutiating pain, I guess it may not hurt to try......
feel better I hope you find some physician who can REALLY help you......
I should add that if it's mainly your right leg, definitely only sleep on your left side and try to tilt left whenever possible.... I feel so bad for you

No sweetie. It hasn't made me feel loopy at all. I did take a nap shortly after I took my pill though, so I guess it made me tired. But I felt totally in control. Vicodin makes me loopy [pre-preggo] so I know what you mean. Fill the script! It may work for you!! I hope it does!

Sciatica is caused by the baby's head pressing on the sciatic nerves, so it's very dependent on fetal position.
While that's probably contributing to this newest level of pain, the main problem is a ruptured L5/S1 disc that's leaning on the nerve. There's lots of things you can do about it...when you're not pregnant.

oh no... so I guess the baby weight just above and next to that level is really doing your spine in big time
I am so so sorry......
