I knew the day would come --- daycare related.

Matthew is moving up to the next room. This is the room between infant and toddler (12-18 months).

Reality had set in this morning when they told me they would introduce him to the room today for a 9/1 switch. The thought of him not being with the staff that he and I have come to know and trust was really not sitting well with me at all on my ride into work this morning.

I just called them to see how it went and they said it didn't go well. So now I feel sort of panicky and upset. They said he cried a lot. I'm surprised because he is typically pretty good with new surroundings. He just hates it when I leave but gets over it pretty quickly.

I know this is inevitable. But he only has two more half days there until 9/1 and I feel like this is really going to be traumatic for him, let alone me, and he isn't really going to have that much transition time at all.

They said the first two weeks are always rough (new schedule, only 1 nap, new people, older kids). Should I just let it take its course, should I try to see if they can take him for more days next week for more integration time? I'm so upset right now. I almost wish that I could be there during some of the transition time so he would feel safe but not sure if that would just be counterproductive.

I just hate sitting here feeling like Matthew feels scared and I'm not there for him. I know we all go through this. Its just that I felt better about dropping him off at 3 months when he didn't know any better than I do now.

I think it's probably harder on you than it is on him. He might be upset for a day or 2, but I bet after a week or 2, he will learn his new surroundings and be just as happy. I wouldn't ask them to make the transition longer, because I think that will just prolong the inevitable. I know it's hard to see our babies cry...but moving up will be a good thing for him...he will enjoy it and learn so much more!

I am going through this to, however dd is a little older and familiar with her new room, she goes in there for early drop off . What I didn't like were little things, they sleep on a cot, at that time, I don't think she was ready. They didn't want bottles - only sippy cups - I felt REALLY rushed. They sleep in their shoes, little things like that. We both adapted, but little things still bother me, but the care she gets there outways all that.

Give it some time, BUT - Who says he can't have 2 naps - that is ridiculos !

It's not that I want them to take longer for the transition, it's just that he is only there monday and wednesday morning next week. If he was there maybe all 3 f/t days like he will be in september maybe that will give him more time to get used to the transition on 9/2.

In terms of the naps, that is their schedule. They all nap at 12:30. They play outside all morning after snack which is at 9:30. Lunch starts at 11:45.

And they don't sleep on cots, they sleep in sleeping bags on soft mats. I'm not sure if they have a bottle rule. He only takes sippy cups during the day anyway and bottles in the morning and night.

i'm not saying I don't wan him to adapt to a new schedule, I'm just concerned that it is going to be hard for him. I mean, I can deal with crankiness and being out of sort. I just get upset thinking that for now he might be scared.

Chat Icon I honestly think it's harder on us then on them. I would give it the 2 weeks and I'm sure he will be doing great after that. Again, it's harder on us because we're not there to see what's going on. But they adapt really, really well. and he will learn so much in the new class!!

Could you have him there for all 3 days, is that possible?

I would go with there schedule. Hang in there!! Thomas moves up to the Toddler Room in October (18 months - 3 years). I am dreading this change! I'm so worried about how he'll adjust. I'm sure it will get better very soon!

ITA! It is amazing how easily these little munchkins adapt to change. I was so heartbroken over the transition to the new daycare for Lucas...he would scream and climb up my leg in the morning when I would drop him off. I can't tell you how many times I sat crying in the car BUT a few times I snuck over to take a peak...he was having a ball with the kids each and every time...hugging the girls Chat Icon sharing snacks...running around. He even has a favorite toy there. Today was the first day the we dropped him off without crying...2 weeks it took but we got here. He sleeps on a cot and has all new faces around him...but he adjusted and so will Matthew.

Fortunately you are in the same center and I would be shocked if his old teachers didn't pop in to see him once in a while. They always do and that will help him too.

It's one of those things...we want to protect them but have to let them go and experience these things so that they can grow. He'll learn from the experience itself as well as the new environment. Adjustment is a big part of growing up...it's just hard to see them struggle through it.
