we are homeowners
I usually post on the parenting board but now offically can post here too. Dh and I closed on our first home July 15th. I would love to say we are enjoying being homeowners but we just aren't. We bought a house from someone who hid the fact that she smoked heavily and let her little dogs pee all over the house. Even some walls have pee damage since they were boy dogs. 
Please has anyone gone through this. Will I be able to get rid of the smell. We ripped up the carpets and padding. We are priming all the wall and ceilings. We have to seal the concrete. Will this get rid of the smell? I just want to cry. Now we found a leak in the dining room ceiling and we have no electricity since 11 am yesterday from the storms  . I just want to run away. Will it get better? How do I get rid of this smell?

First of all - CONGRATS on your new house!   Now almost exactly a year ago this was me. We bought the same kind of house. But we knew that they smoked and the animals peed everywhere.  Just take a look at my pics from a year ago. My pics
Lots of  . First you have already done the right things. The smell went away for us. So don't worry. Clean with Vinegar & water where you can and hopefully the smells will go away shortly. Make sure you leave the windows open as often as you can too. Paint and put new flooring down and everything should be fine. Good Luck!

My gosh! what is it with people and their pets? that is a totally disgusting way for people to live... and for the animals! i don't understand people, i really dont. it's cruelty! now, it is cruelty to the new owners. how dare they sell a house in that condition!

Tell me about it! It still grosses me out when I think about it.  I don't know how they live with the smell in their own house. Gross! And I'm allergic to cats & dogs, so it was real fun for me. That is why we didn't move in for 4 months until we could rip and clean everything the right way. It was nicer to smell the paint smell and I don't like that either.

Yes and I don't know what she did to cover the smell. I didn't notice the smell till the day we took posession. which was 2 days after closing. If wasn't horrible until the day after that when the house was all locked up for the day.
We only saw the house once before the closing walk through. Stupid i
I know. I should have known there was going in be doggie trouble when the doggies had diapers on when the engineer went to do his report. Silly me thought it meant they always wore them when she was out.

the seller knew we planned on moving in that weekend with our baby. Never even mentioned the pee or the smoke.

i know how you feel!! the owners had tons of air fresheners up whenever we came to see the house and when we moved in my goodness the smells were horrific. they must have had a cat without a litter pan in the basement for YEARS the way the carpet smelled!!! we ripped up the carpet and vinegared the floors to death and the smell is gone!! good luck!!

IMO The seller isn't really obligated to announce heavy smoking and dog wee wee.. I would think that would be up to the agent, buyer, engineer to point that out. The diningroom ceiling leak, I feel the engineers report should of picked it up. I would ask my attorney about it. Hopefully its not to late to question why these things were missing in the engineers report.

I had no idea carpet companies won't remove dog pee carpets because its a bio hazard. I never had any animals in my home and I have no air freshners what you smell is what you get. Yes, in that case it should be disclosed and agent, engineer, should of picked it up and no thats not move in condition. The agent is responsible for the discription of the home if it was listed with one. I would ask still your attorney about it... I agree with you thats not right.

Congratulations and I'm sorry that you bought it from a disgusting pig! I'm sure the pee smell will evenutally fade as well as the smolke smell and for now I would refer to Clorox Clean-Up...a dog with a diaper on would be a red flag up for me right away...but then again there is a lot of wackos out there.
