We need some MAJOR major prayers over here, please.
I had posted on the PG board a few days ago about my friend, who is 5 months pregnant.
She had her 20-week Sono last week, and they found fluid around the baby's lungs. Her doctor didn't want to say much, but refered her to a high-risk doctor at Stony Brook.
She went to the appointment today and things don't look so good. The doctor said it is something called "pleural effusion" and that it can be two things.
First, it can be an indication of Down's Syndrome. She goes on Thursday for an amnio and will get the results from that in 7-10 days.
If the amnio shows nothing chromisonal, then she will be sent to a hospital in Phili to have a shunt put into the baby's lungs to help drain the fluid, which is also a very risky procedure. Only 4 hospitals in the US do it.
She didn't really give too many details because she was very upset and didn't talk. She is 39 ---- she waited a long time to get married and then was in a bad car accident about 3 years ago that required many surgeries. For a while she didn't think she'd ever have children, and so this pregnancy has come as such a huge blessing. As you can imagine she's very very upset right now.

When excess fluid is seen in a fetus and it's around the lungs it's called pleural effusion...B/C children with DS often suffer from heart defects it is often the first thing doctors think of when faced with a pleural effusion...
I'll keep her in my prayers....
