So they think FIL had a stroke
Yesterday, on and off, he was feeling numbness in his mouth & his hand. MIL took him into the hospital last night & we talked to her today and she said so far, its pointing to a stroke. They were still running tests. DH just talked to his dad, they need to still run tests, but he cannot feel a lot on his left side--cannot hold the phone, has a hard time talking, and walking on that side.
Any prayers or hugs you have to spare would be appreciated--we live in RI and they live in NJ.
Has anyone experienced this? What would be the next step? Is there any kind of surgery or anything that would be done? Or just rehab?
Thanks!

Re: So they think FIL had a stroke
I'm so sorry. My FIL had a stroke about four years ago, and they didn't know right away either. He's all right now, but he did lose some of the sharpness he used to have. As far as I know, there isn't any surgery they can do right now, just rehab. You should just know, though, that it gets worse before it gets better, and that can be scary both for him and for you. Lots of FM if you need to talk. I know how scary it can be.

Re: So they think FIL had a stroke
One of my best friend's MIL had a stroke less than a year ago. She is paralyzed on one side from it. The key to recovering is attitude, determination and physical therapy. My friend's MIL has given up and has just settled on the fact that she would rather be in a wheel chair unable to hold her grandbabies again. The doctors told her she could regain some mobility if she did the work and she is so depressed that she won't
It can be a long road depending on how severe it was and how long before he got treatment.
You know that Dan's Dad will be in my prayers. IF you need anything just let me know.

Re: So they think FIL had a stroke
Thank you! I am so thankful he went for help because he is usually very stubborn.
He is not in any rush to leave the hospital, so that is good news!

Re: So they think FIL had a stroke
I am so sorry....My Grandma had a series of mini strokes and then a massive one in November. She is paralyzed on one side. However it was much worse and she couldn't see or speak when she was in the hospital.
Therapy can do wonders for stroke victims!
