Insulation Blowing???
We recently bought a cape style house and are looking to insulate the walls in the house. Has anyone done this before and you share your experience. Did you do-it-yourself or hire a contractor to do it? We are looking into both depending on the cost and difficulty of the job. Any advice would be helpful.
If you did do-it-yourself, where did you go about renting the machine? We looked at Home depot and lowes and they only had the machines to blow insulation into the attic.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Re: Insulation Blowing???
We had this done in our side den, which was a very cold room when we first bought the house (there is a crawl space under it and was no insulation between the ceiling and roof). We hired a company to blow insulation into the walls and above the ceiling, and were very happy with the results. The room isn't cold at all anymore!
Unless you are very handy, I think I'd let the professionals handle it, just based on all the work they had to do.

Ditto. Also, just wondering, if you don't mind giving a ballpark figure of what this costs? just trying to prepare for these not fun expenses of owning a home.

Re: Insulation Blowing???
I'm 99% sure this is the company we used: http://www.econotherm.com/insul.htm#
I'll ask my husband later to confirm. It's been three years since we did it, so my memory is a little fuzzy on the details.
I want to say it was approx. $700 for a blowing insulation into three outside walls of a room that is around 8 x 12, putting in a vapor barrier in the crawl space beneath, and a roof vent.

Re: Insulation Blowing???
We used JC Homecare to do two different parts of our home over a 2 year period. I think it was about $900 do do the one-car garage that had been converted to a family room, and about $1300 to do the upstairs attic bedroom area. They were terrific, clean, prompt - can't say anything bad about them, and you can have them come back later (during cold weather) and they will use a heat sensor to determine if heat is leaking due to the insulation settling, and they will re-fill that area at no additional charge. Because ours were small jobs and DH could be flexible with scheduling they were able to give us a better price by fitting us between some bigger jobs. We had a few days notice so it worked out fine. It only took a few hours to do. they are fully licencese in NYC, Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester - main office is in Farmingdale - 631-756-5600

Re: Insulation Blowing???
We had it done in our garage a few years ago because we have bedrooms that sit above our garage and they were chilly in the winter. It took the men a whole day to do.
I will look up who we used and what we had blown in and post back. I have the records somewhere here!!
ETA: We used Federal Conservation Group

We worked with Joey.
