Threatening Note Found Taped To Hallway In Campus Building
JERSEY CITY (CBS) ? St. Peter's College in Jersey City is currently under lockdown. An alert on their Web site instructs students and faculty to remain indoors until further notice for safety purposes.

Campus security is telling people a note with a threat was found taped to a hallway in McDermott Hall. CBS 2 has learned the note made a passing reference to a gunman somewhere on campus.

Jersey City police say they did not find anyone with a gun on campus, but officials weren't taking any chances, especially in light of the recent attack at Northern Illinois University.

"It was enought for the chief [of police] to make the detrmination to have police go to the campus to make sure everyone is safe," said Jersey City Police Lt. Edgar Martinez.

An alert was sent via text message to student cell phones "within minutes."

Students were kept secured in classrooms and dorms as police officers and K-9 officers swept through the buildings looking for anything or anyone suspicious.

A mother of one of the students told CBS 2 she had received a text message from her daughter stating she was locked in a classroom and was worried.

"Everyone is safe here, students are in lockdown," said Martinez. "We're going to check every building, every piece of property on this campus to ensure the safety on this campus."

The Jesuit college located on 2641 Kennedy Boulevard has about 3,000 students enrolled.

While there has not been an actual incident, please remain inside the building you are currently in until further notice. In response to a suspicious note, the College decided to be proactive in following our emergency procedures. Within minutes, campus-wide alerts were sent out and the Jersey City Police are continuing a thorough investigation. Students, faculty, administrators and guests of the College are safely awaiting further instructions. Updates will be delivered once security is assured.

Securing The Campus
In order to assist the Jersey City Police the College Community may be asked to vacate their buildings. Classes which were scheduled to commence before 5:00 pm have been cancelled on the Jersey City campus. Please follow these procedures:

Resident Students: When asked to vacate your building please proceed to the Recreational Life Center.
Commuter Students: When asked to vacate your building please go home.
Faculty: When asked to vacate your building you may go home or to the Recreational Life Center.
Staff: When asked to vacate your building please proceed to the Recreational Life Center. The College is not closing for the day

They just released the lockdown after the police found no threat.
