Spinoff: What happens next when in an accident?

I have never been in an accident before.

Can anyone tell me what is going to happen for the most part?

I filed a claim with my insurance and I have to go pick up a police report in 10 days.

My car is going to be totalled. I can't see them fixing it. Do I wait for the insurance company to tell me its totalled?

Re: Spinoff: What happens next when in an accident?

did the insurance company have it towed to one of their own body shops they recommend?

usually the body shop will make the determination of how much it would cost to fix vs. the fair market value for your car. if its totalled the insurance company will usually issue you a check for the value of your car for you to use towards the purchase of another car.

so you should probably have to follow up with the body shop and see what they say and then with the insurance.

Keep up with any doctor appointments, If it turns out you are hurt (which i sincerely hope you aren't) they will look closely at your record. I got tired of PT after awhile and they took it as a sign that I wasn't that badly hurt. Chat Icon The insurance company should be able to help you with the car details. Just take care of your physical injuries and get every test done now that it's covered by No Fault

Re: Spinoff: What happens next when in an accident?

It wasn't towed by geico yet. I just filed the claim a little while ago.

It's a lease, does that make it different from a finance? It's a brand new car. I only got it in June.

I definitely will keep up on the medical I heard that from someone as well.

Re: Spinoff: What happens next when in an accident?

my husband had an accident in August and we have geico... anyways, geico doesnt have their own body shops but they have body shops that they can recommend for you... our car was towed to a body shop and then we spoke to geico and they sent their towing and towed our car to the body shop they recommended... we were happy with geico customer service but not too thrilled with the body shop, they tried to give us old parts... also, make sure if you are fixing the car take lots of photos! our car had a hole in the dashboard that was not there before and after the accident but when my husband went to pick up the car it was there... they tried to tell us that it was there Chat Icon so document everything!!

Re: Spinoff: What happens next when in an accident?

I agree with seeing a doctor to make sure you are OK. I did after an accident, because I wanted documentation of the injury in case it started to bother me later on.

I have friends who own a body shop. If they don't total the car, ask Geico if your policy covers new or after market parts. Often times the policy doesn't cover new parts, but the customer doesn't know this until after the accident or even after the work has been done. Sometimes the shop will let you pay the difference in cost if you do want the new parts.

Re: Spinoff: What happens next when in an accident?

Jen, I'm in the same boat, this is my first accident ever (except for when my car was parked & a school bus hit it in front of my parents' house! Chat Icon ) I just called State Farm & they gave me a claim # & body shops to go to. I asked her what happens now in regards to the other drivers, etc. & she said she couldn't answer that question??Chat Icon]

Why is the police rept going to take 10 days??? They told me 24 hours & gave me the report # & precinct.

Do you have gap insurance on the lease? If so, this should take care of it.

If it is a lease, then you should have GAPPA insurance to cover the difference between what is owed and what it is worth.

Definitely keep the medical appointments and keep up with Geico to make sure that everyone involved is sending them the info that they need.

Re: Spinoff: What happens next when in an accident?

last year DH totalled his car

it was towed by the police to a body shop

from there the insurace rep came to look at

they claimed it as a total loss

I was assigned a rep to explain everything to me

it took a few weeks- but they cut a check to the bank and sent me the difference (we had insurace for the replacement cost not the value- and since it was a rare car it took longer then normal to figure out the cost to replace it)

make sure you take the plates - you will need to turn those in to the DMV

I will let the leasing company what happened - I called the bank the next day to let them know- and told them I would make the payment due in 5 days to make sure the loan was kept current

good luck!

depending on the leasing company and nys, you have to have gap insurance...

Insurance company is the one to determine if the car it totaled...it would take 80 to 85 percent (depending on the type of vechile) of the car worth as of today to get it total...

Once insurance is taken car of, they (insurance co.) will send a check to your bank to either A. pay it off, or B. pay for the repairs which will be endorsed by the bank and sent back to the repair shop.

contact you bank and find out how much the car is worth as of today to pay off the lease...make sure the account has gap insurance... and thats pretty much it

dw still works in in auto finance and i use to for chase bank
