Pottery Barn vs. JCPenney (long)

We've been looking for living room furniture - square coffee tables and a console table.

We had a good coupon for Pottery Barn so we looked there first and found a coffee table set and console table that were perfect for our needs and taste:

So I look at the coupon and find out it's only good for in-store purchases. Chat Icon So I call two PB's and they don't have them. Then I see the "Catalog / Internet Only" on the page.

Great. We decide to do it anyway, order it sight unseen which I hate, so I start ordering online. And I notice there are two "delivery surcharges" of $40. each. What the heck?

I figure, well their shipping is pricey but lets see what the total turns out to be. And I find that those delivery surcharges are NOT shipping costs. In addition to them, there's 10% of the total for shipping!

It broke down to $142. in shipping! For items that I could pick up and carry out on my own! The total of the order would have been $690. Chat Icon

So I go looking around and find these from JCPenney.com:

Look pretty similar, right? Not only do they look almost exactly the same, but the dimensions and even the construction are EXACT to Pottery Barn.

JCPenney has a store right by my house, so I choose the option to ship there. And shipping? $32.!!

We were saving over $200. since some of the items were cheaper than PB anyway so we decided to splurge and get the matching side table also:

I make the order to JCPenney (again sight unseen) and only two days later I get a call that it's at the store ready to pick up. Chat Icon That was quick!

When we put it together, we were happily surprised at the construction. It's very sturdy, and I think it looks pretty good, what do you think?

(excuse the mismatching stuff... it's still a work in progress) Chat Icon

Re: Pottery Barn vs. JCPenney (long)

that is awesome that it worked out for you!! I was looking at the same tables at PB and was just as shocked and disgusted as you were at the surcharges. INSANE!!

I wish I would have seen those at JC Penney!! DH decided he wanted us to have round tables so I stopped looking for ones that reminded me of the PB set.

Worked out great for you!!Chat Icon

Thanks ladies!

You know, I was thinking exactly that when I saw these in a catalog:

And I realized I'm an idiot. As someone who is a photographer and has probably hundreds of flower pictures, who happens to have a husband who is a graphic designer among other things, WHY would I pay anyone else for prints? Chat Icon

They look great! But you know what, I think its a hit or miss with JC Penney's delivery charges...for example, I wanted to order my livingroom couches from them and the delivery came out to almost as much as couches! So I guess it depends on what you're ordering. But there have been many instances where JC Penney holds almost the same exact items as PB for about a fraction of the price.

Just a tip regarding PB - if you go into the store and place the order there then you don't pay all those extra charges. That is what I have done for all PB furniture we have and you save a ton of $$ that way!!

I elected to have them ship the furniture to the store - you probably had home delivery, right? For that, I would expect to pay much more than $32. but to have it be almost as much as the couch is a bit crazy! Since these were small pieces that needed assembly, I figured they'd probably fit in my Passat. I was right. Chat Icon

I didn't know that JCPenney made it a practice to stock similar stuff! That's pretty smart. I wonder how often stuff like this happens. I'm definitely going to them first from now on!

I like them better too. Chat Icon

That color is Behr Rejuvination. It looks grayer in the picture because I was using the flash. But it's really a yellow/green, at least in good light during the day. It's a little overwhelming when it's wet - I likened it to a grass stain - but I like the way it looks now.

Very nice!! I notice JCP carries a lot of PB lookalike stuff. I got collector shelves for my boys' room at JCP and they were $17.00 each. They are $69 each at PBK. I've seen quite a few other things as well.

Wow, they look awesome!! I love JCP. We got our LR and DR furniture from the and never had any problems. One DR chair was broken and they just sent us a new one, no questions asked.

I have bought some great things from JCP. Our LR furniture came from there and it is really nice, very affordabvle and came in three days!!!

Also...I recently purchased an entry bench and coat shelf ( a Pottery Barn look-a-like) and it is great! My BIL thought it actually was PB!!! Chat Icon
