i bought a book "baby bargains" after the first trimester, which really helped me get upto speed on things. I highly recommend the book.
For me, I started after first trimester because of superstitions and also the fact that its the most risky trimester.

I started immediately - reading reviews on BRU, as well as talking to my BFF who has 2 little ones, and her sister just had a baby as well.

I think I got my reality check when we went to BRU for the first time.....the shear amount of baby stuff out there is totally overwhelming.....that was around 16 weeks or so, then I got baby bargains, did more research online (consumer reports, BRU reviews) I also sent out an email to all of the women I know who have little ones to have them let me know the top 10 items they used (and most included what they thought were the biggest wastes)

I was a peeker to this site even before getting pregnant.
My official research began around 10-12 weeks.
