Preggos over 35

Did you go through genetic testing? Amnio? any other testing to make sure everything was ok?

I wonder how much testing is good and how much is really necessary.

Re: Preggos over 35

We chose to do an anmio, which was recommended, but not required.

If your ultrascreen comes back normal, then you may not want to do an amnio. In the end that was our decision.

Other than that, I don't think we did things any differently than any other pg woman.

We did the ultrascreen. I'm waiting now for the results, and depending on those, we may decide to do an amnio.

Re: Preggos over 35

I am 36 with this pregnancy... So far I have had the Ultrascreen which came back normal and bloodwork came back like I was 2o yr old.. I am doing the AFP in 3 weeks... Since my tests are normal so far and if the next one comes back normal I am opting not to have the amnio.... My first pregnancy was normal so that helped with my decision...

I did not have genetic counseling...

Re: Preggos over 35

I will do the ultrascreen and if it comes back normal - skip the amnio.
There are a lot of risks with the amnio that I'd rather not take.
We did have full blood workups due to IVF, but didn't do PGD.

Re: Preggos over 35

I will be 36 when I deliver and I chose to have an amnio. #1 because of my age and #2 I had 4 1st trimester m/c's which the genetic counselor told me puts me at a higher rate of having a baby with a Chromosonal abnormality. The 2 things together made my numbers look scary to me and my hubby. The amnio was worth it for my peice of mind.

I had to do genetic testing with Amber (I was under 35) because there was birth abnormalities that existed on both sides of the family (my nephew was born missing 1/2 of his brain/STBX's sister was born with brain outside of body). They discovered through the testing that I was a carrier for Cystic Fibrosis. As much as the results scared me, the unknown was scarier.

For my next pregnancy, I will definitely go for genetic testing; to rule out the CF factor, because I'll be over 35 and because I want to ensure that my surgery doesn't affect the viability and health of the baby.

We did an amnio after our ultrascreen results were less than stellar.

Re: Preggos over 35

I'm 37- My ultrascreen numbers were really good, so I skipped the amnio. Since I didn't do the amnio, I had the AFP @ 16wks- it checks for neural tube malformations which is also covered by the amnio. Aside from the lovely "advanced maternal age" on my chart, so far nothing different than the younger moms to be.

We skipped the amnio for various reasons. Mainly, it had taken us a long time to conceive and our chances of a second time weren't the best. While the risks with an amnio are slight, there are risks, and I really didn't want to risk losing a possibly healthy baby. We chose to have the ultrascreen, the 20 week scan, and the AFP tests instead. If any of those showed poor results, we may have had the amnio after all.

That said, this is a personal decision, and you really need to decide if it's right for you or not. I would never fault anyone for having an amnio--it just wasn't right for us.

Re: Preggos over 35

I am 36 and pregnant with my first child. My Ultrascreen could not be completed because my baby measured over 14 weeks.

Some blood was taken today for a quad screen and I am going on Monday for Genetic counseling. Based on the blood and the counseling we will decide on whether or not to do an amnio.

My doctor is leaning against it unless my tests yield negative results.

same here. With DD and this baby I will do the ultrascreen and AFP. If those come back ok I will skip the amnio (I did not have the amino with DD).

I did do all of the genetic testing. I found out that i'm a carrier for Tay Sachs. Fortunately my DH is not.

Re: Preggos over 35

What does AFP stand for? Is it the same as the quad screen or the triple screen?

ETA: Nevermind. I found the answer using Google. Thanks anyway.

Re: Preggos over 35

We did genetic blood tests before I was pregnant. I tried to have an ultrascreen but the baby was not positioned right and we did not get results. Only then did I decide to have an amnio.

Not really. I'm 40, and I am not considered high risk. It depends upon other factors I think, though over 35, you are considered of advanced maternal age and doctors will often offer more tests.

Re: Preggos over 35

When I had DS I was 35. We did the AFP and Ultrascreen and both came back fine. With the next one I will likely be 38 and we will do the same tests. If (GOD FORBID) there are any questions with the initial tests we would decide then if we would do any further testing
