Re: preparing for breastfeeding???
That is an old fashioned thing...not necessary to do, IMHO
I did not "prepare" myself and it was fine

Re: preparing for breastfeeding???
I do not think she is correct:
This is from Babycenter:
Do I need to toughen my nipples? "No," says Kathleen Huggins, author of The Nursing Mother's Companion and a BabyCenter advisor. The hormonal changes pregnancy brings to your breasts are sufficient preparation for most women. Don't rub or scrub your nipples — this will only hurt you and make breastfeeding difficult. Teaching your baby the right way to latch on to your breast from the beginning will prevent your nipples from getting sore.
I totally agree with the above statement!

Re: preparing for breastfeeding???
I just read up on this myself! sooo glad I rarely listen to her lol...I didnt start doing anything because I wanted to check with you girls and on the net more...it would make sense that this is old fashioned...her youngest kid is 16 and her oldest DH is 26 (shes got 6 kids so still thinks she knows it all, even though years have past and new info is out there!)
So I will definatly NOT be doing this to my poor nipples! thanks for you input!

Re: preparing for breastfeeding???
Reading up on the topic, about proper latching on and problems during BF is the best way to prepare yourself...although honestly, it all won't make any sense until you're going through it!

Re: preparing for breastfeeding???
I don't think thats necessary. Just make sure you take breastfeeding classes and see a lactation consultant if you need help. Improper latch is what causes sore nipples and if you know how to remedy that you'll be fine.

Re: preparing for breastfeeding???
I went to a BF class last week and the instructor said specifically NOT to do this. Your MIL is living in the past.

Re: preparing for breastfeeding???
I BF'd my DD and did nothing to prepare, although the first few weeks my nipples were very raw and sore! They even bled.

Re: preparing for breastfeeding???
No way!
Just buy yourself a good nursing pillow, lansinoh cream, and disposable nursing pads for leaks. And as someone else suggested have the number of a good lactation consultant ready. Thats all you should need to start!
