Any mommies-to-be over 35?

I am 36 and pregnant with my first child. I am just wondering if there is anyone else out there over 35.

What extra treatment or tests (besides the amnio) can I expect?

Are the OB appts more frequent?

Re: Any mommies to be over 35?

I had my baby already (in March) and I turned 35 a couple months before she was born.

I didn't have an amnio. My OB said that I didn't need one because the ultrascreen came back with excellent results. She said that if I was closer to 40 and had iffy ulstrascreen results she likely would have suggested the amnio.

I didn't have any additional tests, just the routine ones. (quad screen, Level II, gestational diabetes, standard bloodwork)

Otherwise, my visits were on schedule like everyone else's. I had an uncomplicated pregnancy till my BP became high at 33 weeks, but I don't know how much age was a factor. My mom had extremely high BP when pregnant with me, but she was only 24.

Re: Any mommies-to-be over 35?

I'm 36 weeks pg. There were many tests offered to me; the only one I took was the quad screen. But my OB's practice also refers anyone over 35 to a specialist for sonograms, and the sonogram doc likes to keep patients coming back. So I had way more sonos than I think someone under 35 would have. Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary, though there is a red AMA (advanced maternal age) written on my chart. Chat Icon

I am 39 and will be 40 when I deliver. I did have an abdominal CVS but aside from that I am treated as normal. My OB told me that unless I have high blood pressure or GD we will treat the pregnancy as normal, no additional tests or visits. So far my blood pressure has been low and I have had all the standard tests and everything looks good.

I am 36 so far I haven't had anything else. We talked about the amnio and I told him I will do the other tests if they all come back normal then I will not do it.

Re: Any mommies-to-be over 35?

I am 38 and this is my first.
We went to genetic counseling and not sure if eveyone does that or if they sent us because of our ages.

I did decide on an amnio as we wanted to know ahead of time if there would be any issues with the baby. Thankfully all is well.

Other than that, I think any testing I've done hasn't been any different than any one younger than me.

Re: Any mommies-to-be over 35?

I just turned 40, this is my first and I am 35 weeks right now. I had an ultrascreen and had very good results, so I opted not to have an amnio. Since I didn't have the amnio, I had the AFP test and then the same tests everyone else has - Level II sono, glucose test, will have the strep B test next week. I have had a few growth sonograms because the baby is measuring big, but other than that, nothing really out of the ordinary.

Re: Any mommies-to-be over 35?

I'm over 40 and this is our first. We had the ultrascreen and based on those results had an amnio. I didn't bother with the AFP or quad screen b/c the amnio is a diagnostic test rather than a screening.

At 32 weeks we had a toxemia scare, which turned out to be just a scare and not really toxemia. As a result I had one extra ultrasound and one extra MD visit. Other than that, all MD visits have been on the same schedule as every other woman with a "normal" pregnancy on this board.

I had my first already when I had just turned 37. My pregnancy was super smooth. I didn't do an amnio b/c my ultrascreen results were fine. No extra appts or anything.

Re: Any mommies-to-be over 35?

I just turned 36 last month and I'm currently 11w6d. I'm doing the ultrascreen this Monday, and based on those results, we'll decide whether to do the amnio. I'm also going to get the AFP screening test (for spina bifida) but I'm not sure if that's a normal test or age-related.

Re: Any mommies-to-be over 35?

I was 39 when DC was conceived, and I'm 40 now. This is our first child.

My pregnancy has been very smooth so far, and I'm 37 weeks now. The baby is doing well, and I haven't had any complications such as GD or high blood pressure. I did have the ultrascreen, and also the AFP and Level II. If any of those tests showed problems I would have had an amnio, but they did not. My doctor's appts. have been normal. I did have an NST and BPP today because of my "advanced maternal age"--I don't think women under 35 routinely have this done unless there is a problem.

The only way my pregnancy has been complicated is because I also have epilepsy. Though I've had no seizures for a very long time, so my doctors were pretty positive about my getting pregnant. I have had to see my neurologist every two months, but this would have been the case even if I got pregnant at a younger age.

Good luck to you! If you are in good health and take care of yourself, there is no reason to think you will not have a healthy pregnancy!

Re: Any mommies-to-be over 35?

I am 39 and will be 39 1/2 when I am due. I am 23 weeks. I did the AFP test only. The test came back with a very low risk factor (lower than someone under 35. 1 in 5000 risk of Downs so I am passing on other tests. I know the others are more accurate - Amnio but opted not to have that. So far pregnancy is great. Babys moving all the time. I have a little insomnia but dont really feel pregnant. I do have a belly... though

Re: Any mommies-to-be over 35?

I'm 37 & this is our 1st. They suggested an amnio, but my ultrascreen numbers were really good, so I didn't have it. Nothing out of the ordinary. I'm having a lot of discomfort & I can't help wondering if I'd feel better if I were younger, but other than that, all's well. The same people who wrote "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" have a book called "Your Pregnancy After 35" which I've found really helpful.

Re: Any mommies-to-be over 35?

I am in my very late 30s. You can guess my age now! Chat Icon . I had a lot of extra doctor visits but only because of my medical history and because of a pregnancy complication that I do not believe to have been related to my age whatsoever. I had an amnio but I could have opted not to. I did it only because I was unable to get any results from the ultrascreen due to the baby's position.

Re: Any mommies-to-be over 35?

Hi and Congratulations !

I am 39 now and Pg with second baby. I was 37 when I had my son. The only test my dr. kind of pushed on me was the amnio and it was a piece of cake. She is not having me do anything different or go about this pregnancy any different bc of my age.

I feel great, just tired but I think it's also bc I am constantly running after my 19 month old son !!

Good Luck !!

Oh, I only had an amnio this time around. My blood test numbers were really good and my dr. didn't think I really needed the amnio with my first.
