Can we discuss guardianship please?
So although I am only 4w5d DH and I already know who we plan on asking to take guardianship of our children should something happen to us.
Now, what the heck is the next step? I guess we would have to ask the couple chosen wif they would accept that responsibility. Then, I suppose having the paperwork drawn up, right?

Maybe call a lawyer and ask. I don't know anyone who did this so I have no advice. It is something to think about though.

I would call a lawyer and have a will written out that specifically states who you want to take care of your child. This way there is no question about what is to be done if something terrible was to happen. We are planning to have one drawn up. I wouldn't want there to be any custody fights is anything ever happened to us.

Re: Can we discuss guardianship please?
We asked my brother and SIL if they would take our children if anything happened to us. They said of course. We then went to the lawyer and had all the paperwork done.

My sister is a lawyer so she is going to do our will for us.

Re: Can we discuss guardianship please?
Ok, so guardianship typically gets included within your will? It's not a separate document?

It depends on what you want. I recommend a separate document known as a designation of a standby guardian in addition to naming the same person in the will. Not all states have provisions for standby guardians though, so a will might be the only way to go. That is why you should consult a lawyer.
