Cereal in bottle?
At our 4 month visit, we were discussing DS's eating habits and the doc said he might have developed some reflux and she wanted to test it by putting oatmeal in his bottles for the next 10 days and seeing if it improved. She has me putting 3 tablespoons of oatmeal in his regular 6oz of formula for every bottle, that's 4-5 a day. Does that seem like a lot to you?

Re: Cereal in bottle?
I put rice in all of Jack's bottles per my ped. I put a tsp. for every 4 ozs. He gets 6oz bottles so he gets a Tsp and a half of cereal.
So far (knock on wood) we have had no issues with him choking.

Re: Cereal in bottle?
My DS has horrible reflux. As per his Gastro Dr's orders we put 1 Tbsp of formula for every 2 oz. We use a Y cut nipple because the other ones tend to get clogged. It has helped him tremendously. It thickens it up enough so that it helps him, but not so thick that he would choke. Also, our feeding specialist recommended that we blend the powder ahead of time so it's more fine in case we were worried about the little pieces of cereal.
Good luck, Nicole

Re: Cereal in bottle?
Nothing worked for my son but cereal in his bottle. He's on Alimentum plus rice cereal in his bottle and he's over a year old. Thought he'd be on milk by now. No such luck. I hope for your sake it's not reflux. Or at least not a bad case. It's hard. It can cause choking only if you don't shake it really well or if you forcibally make the nipple hole bigger. I wouldn't worry to much about it. If it works, great. GL!

Re: Cereal in bottle?
I dont know if I would use oatmeal, I think it would be too thick. I put 2 tsp. Gerber rice cereal in DS's 6 oz. bottles. You have to shake it well. I dont know how a baby can choke on it, the hole is not big enough to let a huge clump through. You also will have to make the nipple hole bigger if you add cereal.
ETA: I have been putting rice cereal in DS's bottles since he was 2 1/2 mo. old and never had a problem.

Yeah, that's we're doing. It's 1 Tbsp for every 2oz and we use the Y cut nipples. It just seemed like a lot, so I'm glad to see someone else is doing it! The doctor said to use the oatmeal because it would be gentler on his system than rice cereal. I shake it well and have never seen any clumps in it before--but Imust say I'm freaked out to read it can cause choking because I'd never heard that before!
