Anyone have Hasimoto's disease?

It is a thyroid condition. If so are you being treated for it?

Re: Anyone have Hasimoto's disease?

My sister has it. Right now meds aren't a necessity but she does go for blood work every six months to see if there have been any changes where meds would be come a necessity.

PS... I always thought that was a made up name...LOL... my grandmother had it, my cousin has it and my sister has it and when they would call it that, I thought it was something they made up to be funny! Chat Icon Chat Icon

It is a bizzare name. Probably the doctor that "discovered" it!

I have it! YAY!!! Chat Icon

It sucks. I was diagnosed a few years ago, and my thyroid is never regulated. It causes crazy bouts of exhaustion, irritability, weight fluxuations (i'm on the upswing of that right now blech!), and it can cause difficulty with getting pregnant (well, that's with any thyroid condition, but moreso for HT).

I got to my doc every month for bloods. My skin is swiss cheese!!!

PS - I am currently on 175mcg of Synthroid... sometimes the dose is raised, sometimes it's lowered, depending on the month.

Re: Anyone have Hasimoto's disease?

I have it, and it is a strange name. When my doctor told me I had this, I got really scared and thought it was something horrible.

It is a thyroid condition, usually underactive. Right now, I am on no medication, and I have my thyroid checked annually. More often now because I am pregnant, and the levels could change. My levels are still good now.

I think it's the kind of thing that eventually gets worse. As long as it's treated though, is doesn't seem to be too terrible, though as someone noted, you may be exhausted, gain weight, etc.

Re: Anyone have Hasimoto's disease?

I have Hashimoto's. I thought it had nothing to do with underactive (hyper). Chat Icon Anyway, mine has always been a hypo issue, and I take 150mcg of levothyroxine daily. My doctor told me it's the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US.

Here's some good, basic info:

May Clinic on Hashimoto's

ETA: I would suggest seeing an endocrinologist if you're not already. My OB totally mistreated it when I was early in my pregnancy, and thank goodness my internist said I need to see a specialist or me or the baby could have been in trouble.

Re: Anyone have Hasimoto's disease?

I have it as well--I was diagnosed when I was 20. I take 150 mcg of Synthroid daily (though I'm starting to drag again and I think it may be time to have my levels adjusted again).

Just as a PSA, Hashimoto's is a genetic disease, affecting females. If you have it, the odds are near 100% that your mother and all of your sisters have it, too. For some, like myself, it's adult onset.
