CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
These words will ring in my head forever.
I heard/saw them at the Childrens Health& Safety Expo at FLowerfield last month.
Many times we think of a child screaming for help or splashing like crazy, but in reality, are these few words.. CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND.
Just wanted to get this out there, so we all have that much more of a sense of how a split second is all it takes.
I just found this online (random search). Just some info for us to keep in mind...
CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND.

Re: CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
I almost learned this the hard way. I turned my back for only a few seconds to get a washcloth and she was face down in the tub. I did NOT hear a thing and I was RIGHT there in the same room.
I learned a very valuable lesson and I'm so grateful and lucky that nothing horrible happened.
Thank you for posting this.

Re: CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
I say it all the time, but pools scare the crap out of me. Sean's been taking lessons since last and we're starting Kevin in the spring (or sooner).

Re: CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
Thank you for posting this - this is so frightening...
I have to say, I could see how this can happen. While giving Cailen a bath in his hammock, wher he is hardly even in the water, I saw something scary...
When I was rinsing shampoo out of his hair, water trickled onto his face - he panicked and slid deeper into his hammock and began flailing. It scared the crap out of me, even though the hammock was holding him, I realized how quickly a situation can turn dangerous,....

Re: CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
this is so true, great PSA...
we had a drowning just last Saturday at our local pool and alot of people around here were searching for answers as to how a 20yr old swimmer can drown with lifeguards monitoring the water AND his friend waiting for him to come up out of the water. The fact is, if someone is in serious trouble you don't hear a thing, no splashing or flailing. tragic....

Re: CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
Thank you for posting this Anna.
I remember when we took Joseph to the beach. He was sitting in water that went up to his waist & fell over. I'll never forget the surprised look on his face as his face went underwater. He just looked scared but he didn't even try to upright himself or that all he had to do was push up. Thank G-d we were right there & watching him.
I'm sending this to my mom & MIL. Maddie & Joe are visiting her for 7 loooonnng days. My biggest fear is the pool.

Re: CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
So there were THREE drownings this weekend
The 4yr old girl in commack. A 6yr old boy in Brunswick (I think) at his own birthday party (I think I heard that right ) and a 20yr old.
I dont know specifics, just heard this all on the radio.
Is anyone else shaken up over these? the one close to home, close age to my own child, has really shaken me up.

Re: CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
SOOOOOO scary but so true . At the pool recently, I was right next to DS and I looked away for a SECOND, literally and next thing I knew the lifeguard (who was right next to me) was in pulling DS up...he was face down without a sound.
It was the SCARIEST moment of my life and I felt soooo guilty afterwards :(
ETA: It was only 12 in. of water.

Re: CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
soooo important!!! abuot 10 years ago, my moms close friend had a 14 month old daughter who drowned in a small pond in their backyard. they were having a party, and there were about 20-30 people there, and everyone thought someone else was watching the little one. she walked right into the pond.... nobody ever heard a thing. it so important to keep in mind that its not always the screaming, flailing thing we think it might be....

Matthew does the same thing when I wash his face.
Please I don't even like to give DS a bath all alone. My mom is always with me.

Re: CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
So scary! My 2 older ones are very comfortable in the water. Both wear the blow up things for the upper arms and of course dont go swimming without us right there. However this weekend, DD forgot she took the arm things off and went to go back in the pool and walked up the ladder and right in and sunk like a rock. I was right there and my BIL was in the pool and pulled her right up but it was eerie, she just went right down. No flailing, nothing...so I can see how true this is. Scared the f**k out of me. Those poor people who drowned this weekend!

After hearing Joseph repeatedly say what a good swimmer he is, DH brought him in our friend'ss pool without the blowup swimmies. Scared Joseph horribly.
I know it sounds mean but the last thing I want is my son being cocky about how he can swim & not have the backup knowledge behind it.

Re: CHILDREN DROWN WITHOUT A SOUND
I believe this - right in front of us at St. Maarten Cailen slipped in the kiddie pool, and went straight forward face first with no knowledge of how to flail or protect himself - it was a SPLIT second and we pulled him up before he could even sputter but it was frightening to see...
