Well, this is a good thing to remember. It is the truth that alot of the pain of labor and childbirth is exaggerated and exacerbated because of maternal ignorance and fear. If you educate yourself on birthing techniques and approach your labor from a prepared state of mind, it won't be so bad (barring any extreme circumstances).

I will say that my first labor and delivery (that included an epidural) was actually worse than my second (which was completely natural). I would have a natural birth again in a heartbeat. I was more informed and more educated the second time around - and feeling more "in control" really helped w/how I coped w/the discomfort of labor. And once the baby is out, the pain goes away instantly. IMO, it is not that bad, at all.Chat Icon I did not scream.

Does an epidural REALLY take all the pain out of labor/childbirth? I'm petrified of possibly having an episiotomy/tear. I have had abd surgery in the past (one resulting in a c-section like scar) so I would not mind having a section but geez- if it's so easy with an epidural, why dosn't everyone do it that way?

Re: ok BIG question for the mommies

When I decided to have no drugs during labor with my son, I asked my mother what it felt like. Her exact words were, "Now I know why and animal would chew its own leg off to get away from a trap, because I would have done anything to get away from the pain."

She was exactly right, but it only hurt like that for the last hour or so, before that it was bearable.

No. Towards the end you feel all the pressure from the head coming down and you can feel pain when you're pushing.

Sometimes epidurals wear off for people, or they only work for one side of their body. With my second DD I had a walking epidural which is a very light dose. Towards the end I did strat feeling contractions again.

Re: ok BIG question for the mommies

I posted last night but for some reason, it wouldnt go through.

I was SO SCARED of everything, I didnt know how I was going to get through it. But I did and now, I have an inner strength that I NEVER had before in my life.

I had total back labor. Right before getting the epi, I was crying and moving around all over the bed. They hurt SO BAD! When I got the epi, it was wonderful but for some reason kept wearing off..so every few hours the pain from the contractions would come back again and they would have to top me off. Now..pushing..ahhh the pushing. Apparently my doctors policy was to shut the epi off while pushing. I didnt know this from the beginning so when they said they were going to do that, I FREAKED! It hurt so bad. I pushed for 3 hours, only to wind up with am emergency c section because she just wasnt "coming down" at all. The recovery from the c stunk (again for me..everything is personal experience and opinion). BUT..knowing that I had just brought MY child into this world and thats why I was in so much pain, it really didnt make a difference to me. I would have taken that and more. I guess thats why people have 2, 3, 4 and 5!

I always say if I can get through it, then ANYONE can. In the end, when you look at your child, the pain fades and you realize that you are now a member of a very special group in this world..theres nothing like being a mom!
